Does anyone know if there is a way to have Arcserve do a inventory of the slots automatically. This is kind of a pain, because you can not erase the tapes without doing an inventory first. Thanks
But i don't see why you have to do inventory before you erase a tape. Normally ARCserve knows (via its database) where the tapes are placed, if not it could'nt even do a rotation job with more than one device group.
So it's only if you suspect that ARCserve has "forgotten" something or you have placed new tapes in your library (maybe that is what you mean?) or the tapeengine has restartet, you may have to do an inventory. And that inventory has to be manually (as i know)
I have been using Arcserve for some time through various versions. The changers whether it be DAT Autoloaders or DLT tape libraries, Arcserve has always inventoried automatically. However they (Computer Associates) do make you purchase one more item ... The Changer Option. This allows Arcserve to recognize and use the various options which are included with your autoloader. The autoloader then is managed via the Tape Server/Changer Management. Hope this helps.
After rebooting the server that has ArcServe installed on it, and then attempting to inventory the slots on a DLT 4000 autoloader the inventory fails and the information written to the arcserve.log file is:
E8020 Failed to inventory slot(s)
One slot reads as "Empty" and I suspect that tape is still sitting in the picker or the drive itself.
