I have a rudimentary question. I have only a single computer at home. It works with Fedora Core 5. It has Windows XP too. I have double booting system. The GRUB decides whether to go to Windows or FC5. The default is Fedora Core 5.

Now I bought another computer to make a server. I will install Solaris and Windows 2003 server on the new computer.
What is the router you recommend me to buy? I need a router which has a built in firewall. I am looking for a cheap router.

Wow---that sounds a lot like my setup at home! I have an Intel X86 box with Solaris 10 on it, and another with FC5, and a third and fourth, both with XP Pro! I don't dual boot, because I run a RAID 0 with 100GB SATA's and back them up (files only) to a 300GB SATA---I have had one fail before, and let GRUB do the chainloader---all drives were hosed, because it seems picky about the config...anyway...the 1700 series and even the 800 series are always good for firewalls, with the right IOS. They are fairly inexpensive on Ebay. I have an 837 that does just fine, but I also have two 2620's, a 2503, and a 2620XM---the 2620's have advanced security IOS, and the 2620XM has advanced enterprise on it. My 837 has C837-KYO3SY6, version 12.3(11)T5, and this image includes IPS. The advanced enterprise on the 2620XM is by far the best that I have, though. Typically, for firewalls, the PIX boxes are used. Those are unchartered waters for me though. I also use the 837 as my VPN server.

Thanks burtsbees for the reply.

Those PIX boxes are from Cisco. They are beyond my budget.
What is this 837? It is Linksys 837 or DLink 837.
Could you please tell me the details?
I need a router with a firewall.I could pay maximum 100-120 US dollars.

Hello
It important to know what technology you are using to connect to Internet.Cable,ADSL etc.Because maybe you don't need a router with the built-in ADSL interface like the 837.
Anyway that would be the Cisco 837.Maybe with some patients you can pick-up one of Ebay for a little more than what you want to spent. That would be with shipment included.
Cisco is the leader in the market, but you can find other products with good built-in firewall for a lot less.

I connect to the Internet using a Cable modem at the moment. I had an ADSL connection via the telephone jack before.
My current ISP provides Cable modem connection.

Hello
Well you wouldn't need a cisco 837.I have never network a cable connection.I have heard there are a bit tricky.I don't know if the cable modem can talk to the Cisco routers ethernet port.Does the modem give your workstation an IP address via DHCP?Did you install any software the the PC to allow connection?
In any case you would need a Router with 2 ethernet interfaces. The Cisco 806,1605 or 2611 is the cheapest solution. The 1605 and 2611 would need the right flash and Dram to support the IOS firewall.Another solution would be to replace youe cable modem with a CISCO cable modem. This solution is a good all-in-one.
You could also use a Linksys or some other producer, but Cisco will give you the most flexible configurations.
