I tried using gpedit.msc to set a group policy hiding the "settings" tab of the Display Properties applet, and this succesfully removed the tab...for all users logged in. Is there any way to bind this so that the settings tab will still appear to members of the Administrators group (Read: me and me alone) and not to anybody else

(I've got a problem with a couple of users; I don't mind them using my computer for internet access while I'm away, but they keep changing the bloody screen resolution to 640x480!)

Did you do this for a local machine or Domain? For a Domain, open AD snap-in, Right-click your Domain name and choose properties. From the Group Policy tab, highlight the policy in question-> properties-> Security. Uncheck the Apply Group Policy from the Administrators group.
With a local policy, I'm not too sure...

No, sorry, it's a local machine; It's not even part of a workgroup.

According to this KB article, only in a Domain can you edit users and groups which have policies applied. They suggest using the registry to do such things as a workaround. Here's a link, What you might try is logon as one of you "problem children". Run REGEDIT and navigate to \HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer. Look and see if you can tell what key restricts the Display Properties. Then logon as Administrator and navigate to the same key and remove it. I don't know if this will work, but if you try it, make sure to keep very careful documentation of any changes you make in the registry to put them back if you notice trouble....

Thanks--That worked like a charm (Except it was in Policies\System rather than Policies\Explorer)
