Hi:

I have two burnt out RCA VCR's.

(Gives away his age.)

Is there some kind of software I can purchase that would allow me, in conjunction with a TV capture card, I assume, which I don't have yet either, to record onto my DVD R/RW internal burner, a TV news program during a specific time frame, let's say the evening news from 6:00 to 7:00 pm, if I preset my cable channel?

Am I hallucinating again, or is there something like that on the market?

Whatever it is, would abviously have to activate my DVD burner on a preset timer.

I doubt it, but I thought I would check it out first here, since I can't even really find any VCR's anymore, even on line, and the combo standalone VCR/DVD recorders cost a fortune, like around $250 or so.

Thanks in advance for any helpful advice,

DJSRC

Well you can save it to hard drive. There are severaal programs and devices that will do it. As for to dvd I'm not sure. You can also get a system for you cable or sattelite provider.

u can use i.e nero incd or any other packet-writer software. just give the recording soft the dvd as target.

Hi:

and thanks for your tips on the Media & Nero links.

I will have to study both of those, as I am not familiar with either one, or the technology that they derive from.

As far as the hardware to utilize those programs, I am assuming, as per an article in yesterday's NY Times, that this is what I should be adding to my system, essentially?

Thanks for your help,

Also check out gbpvr.com for freeware recording/scheduling software. The hauppage software doesn't work on all computers.

I have not seen any software that will record directly to a burner like you are asking for, however that does not means it does not exist. The software I know of writes a file to the harddrive then you would burn it to a dvd or cd.
You would be better asking this question in forum like listed below rather then in an WinXp forum

I just posted about the Hauppauge PVR-250 model in your other thread. I've been quite pleased with it.

Also definitely check out as gargoyle suggested. There are a lot of guides and tools out there to help you if you decide to customize your own setup instead of buying a Hauppauge card.

Thanks!

Honestly, I really just want to do stuff like record the nightly news, and then watch it at my convenience, so it's not necessary to be able to burn right to dvd/cd.

Anyway, I have a 120 gig 7200 rpm SATA drive, and have only used about a fourth of it in over three years, so there is no prob with how much space gets used if I record for an hour in good quality.

It's a little frustrating that every time I think I have a handle on whatever technology is out there, something else comes up that requires intensive new study.

Oh well, time to hit the books, as they say!

Thanks, I'll look further into the PVR-250!
