Hi everyone!

I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice.

I was planning on taking the A+ exam in the future.
I am studying from the A+ Passport book.

I understand most of the harware part , but am having problems with getting to grips with OS side.
I have never really understood the Dos, Win-Dos, etc stuff.
That black screen with a command promt has always been kinda freaky to me!
Can anyone recommend a book, or website, that might be able to help me with the OS side for the Exams.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thankz for your time.

Well freddy here's my 2 cents.

If you have the A+ passport, you already have a good book. If you need to learn dos, you need to use it!
Follow the first couple of sections on dos in the
A+ passport and just keep playing with commands.
Also, if you have a computer, even an old 486 or Pentium, try partitioning the harddrive, installing windows, and playing with configuration settings.

The best way to learn this stuff is by doing it.

Good Luck

Just read and search for questions from brain bumps and cert21 and examnotes you will pass.

A+ Wave Technologies is a good Manual.

Freddy, A+ Passport is a great book. I think you have to start by accepting that a non-windows (graphic environment), is not attractive to you. The best way of learning any OS is using it, practicing, being envolved in it, select a small set of commands and use them, learn them. Then, select another set of commands, and keep doing this. I found that, if you learn DOS, you have more chances to solve problems than a person that only likes Windows, and it is convenient if you want to learn Unix / AIX in the future.

It sounds to me that you will do good no matter what!!!.

Go get it !!!!

See if you can get your hands on DOS for dummies... don't spend much for it. Its going on E-bay for a few bucks.

It's a good book for getting into DOS. CJ

As msantana said, the best way of learning is by doing it.
If you can find a set of MS-Dos disks and a hdd to put it on,that would also be a good place to start. There is a glossary in the help section. I am an old fart and have been messin' with pc's since the 8088 days. You will probably have a better understanding of things if you actually use and apply them instead of only reading about them in books. I know because I passed it with out ever opening a book.

before i took the a+ tests i went to comptia.com and got a copy fo their blueprint for the exam. It tells exactley everything that could possibly be on test it really helped me out

Another good place for resources is They have practice exams(skill drills) and study areas.

I agree strongly that the ONLY way to get good at DOS is to use it...it will mean something to you if you have done it before. If you are just trying to memorize the information, when you get into a JOB where it is relevant, you wont know what you are doing.

Good reading here...
if you want more links I can give you a boatload.

Good Luck! Kimber

The more I learn, the more I realize how much more there is to know!
