A+/Network+ 2

A couple of questions please:

1. I'm looking to take the A+ exams in early December. I have gone completely though Mike Meyers all-in-one book and also his set of A+ CDs. Is this enough to pass the exams? Should I consider another book as well in case he's missed anything? I was originally going to do two textbooks but went with the CDs instead. I found some stuff on the CDs (e.g. memorising the different Port Numbers - http, ftp, etc.) that wasn't in the book.

2. I am intending to then study for the Network+. How long does this take to study for compared to the A+? The syllabus looks smaller but I guess it's harder...?

1. I used Mike Meyers' All-in-one (Fifth edition) and passed both the A+ exams in June. If you know the material well enough, you should pass as well.

2. Again, if you know the material well enough, you should be able to pass. The Network+ is a single exam.

Actually I haven't taken the Network+, but I expect to take it by the end of the year.

I'm about to take the Network+ exam and have been studying this exam criteria for about a year, yes I know this is a long time for a full time family man with no prior networking experience and yes you will need to study hard for this one. Good Luck

Thanks 1fishon. I'm looking at just over 6 months for the a+ while working full-time with a little experience, so hopefully about the same for the network+.

I think I spent a few months working on the A+, but I had read Mike Meyers' A+ All-In-One 3rd Edition and then read almost all of the 5th Edition. I took the two exams on the same day and the length off the two tests was exhausting, about 2 1/2 hours.

I'm studying for the Net+ now, and simultaneously studying for a Microsoft exam, but I expect the prep time to be about a month (including reading the material).

I wish you all the best on your efforts as I can barley scrape together enough time in a week to devote to my studies. It should be a number one priority and it seems to fall all the time. I think it is alot harder when your in your fourties to create good study habits. If anyone has any input this would be great to hear.

I wouldn't get discouraged. I'm looking at turning 37 by the end of the year, and the only time that I can devote to reading or studying seems to be after 9:00 at night, when the kids are finally in bed.

Make a plan, stick with it, and you'll be fine.

Ah 40 smortie, 44 here and nothing is out of ones hands who grabs wisely. Ya have to keep the brain cells active, I have found out or they leave. I started in '98 and did Associates in 18 months then passed CCNA, now studying for A+, while working in the field. Took awhile to find a nice job that pays while teaching me at the same time.

At 37 I find the motivation difficult when I already have a full time job. I'm also starting to question wether I'm learning to pass exams rather than retaining the material.
