A little off topic as this is not strictly an IT question. The last 2 years I have been traveling a lot on business, and more and more I ave noticed envelopes in hotel rooms to tip the housekeeping personnel.

10 years ago -- the last time I had traveled extensively -- these were NEVER around. Now they seem to be almost everywhere. The question is should I tip or what is expected or normal in this regard?

For what its worth, I do not stay at 5 star places (at least not very often) I usually stay at a Hamptons, Best Western, etc. Anywhere from $60 to $100 per night is my average hotel bill.

Any feedback on this appreciated.

Last I heard, standard tip for dining is 15-20%
(US, SoCal)
Depending on atmosphere, service, food, and so forth, I will tip 10% to 25%
with less (0) for problems and more (maybe 30%) for small bill/good service.
(spend a long time at a coffee shop, many refills, still a small bill- tip extra!)
cheers
Jay

suppose from the assumption of my initial post, as in i guessed some of you were american, it its all down to culture.

There's a tv advert running here in the UK at the moment from the bank HSBC claiming they're 'the worlds local bank'

where they demonstrate how hand signals in Brazil that are good, are offensive in other SA countries e.t.c.

well the latest is a group of foreigners in an Icelandic restuarant where the waitress gives the customer's tip back to him, and turns away and walks off everytime they all put more in the tip coz they think they've offended her.

they don't accept them, in the UK they're not 'normally' expected (unless you work in an overpriced London club 'toilet' where they seem to expect a tip for giving you a roll of paper to wipe your hands)
