This problem is described in MS article Q229810. I have been working on this myself. To begin with, upgrade your WMI to 1.5. Upgrade MDAC to 2.6. You are already on SP3. This probably will not work, but MS will eventually ask you to update these. Then call MS technical support at 800-936-3400 #4 and tell them the article number. This incident is probably on them.

I have gotten the error when I run the SMS Admin Console on my Windows 2000 Professional laptop.

However, I have NEVER gotten the error when running Terminal Server through my Windows 2000 Professional laptop to connect to a Windows 2000 Advanced Server on my desktop that has the SMS 2 Admin Console!!!

These two machines (the Pro and the AS) are on the same drop in the closet, so I'm pretty sure that the network is exactly the same. Hmmmm...when connecting with the Pro machine, I'm using a PC Card NIC.

I don't know where to go on this one, but like I said....I use a reliable machine for connectivity right now, so I'm not very interested in figuring it out.

I have upgraded my WMI to 1.5 and the particular message about the Factory Enumeration Failure went away, but the fact that the console still will not bring back any collections, hierarchy etc. means that my console is not working right. Any ideas???

When the nodes of the SMS MMC will not open, it is almost always security related. Sounds like your permissions are not being enumerated correctly.

First, check group membership and Object Permissions. Then, check that the local group "SMS Admins" on the SMS Site Server and make sure you are in it, and that it is present in the SMS Site Server's WBEMPerm (NT4 servers) or the WMI Control (Win2k servers). Tip: If you use the Manage SMS Users wizard it will set your WMI permisssions for you automatically!

I seem to be getting this error on Windows XP, and Have upgraded to SP5. Have removed and reinstalled several times with no help, got working MMC files from another computer that is working to no avail?

I had this problem on my laptop and finally discovered that somehow my Net Firewall was turned on. Turned it off and the Console was again worked fine.

You may also want to try running dcomcnfg at the Command Prompt. Make sure it is enabled. This was a problem on another machine where it would not connect to the database at all.
