I recently formatted my hard drive on a personal computer that had been running ME. I choose to reinstall my 98 on the comp because of my familiarity with the OS and several conspicuous bugs i found in ME. I reinstall 98 following the standard hold your hand precedures. I install my drivers for my video and sound card (3dfx voodoo 5, and soundblaster gamer respectivly) and then the computer starts to act strangly. I try reinstalling my programs but windows installer takes about a full minute to load on a 866 computer with 128 ram. I reboot, and it takes about 3 full minutes to do so. It seems to hang up at a certain point where it displays a couple of dos commands activated in autoexe.bat then says that windows is currently loading. other things act much slowwer than they did in both ME and 98 when i had it installed before ME. I have reformatted and retried several times and find myself stuck. If anyone can help me out i would appreciate it.

Thanks, Teksoul

format your hard drive
create a directory on your hard drive ie win98
copy the windows 98 cd to directory win98 on your hard drive
and run setup from your hard drive

unless you have hardware problems, you should be able to install windows 98 without difficulty.

I just joined this forum, and don't know if it's okay for me to jump in on someone else's question and answer. If so, please excuse my doing so.

It's just that I have WIN 98 SE and having problems with it, and have been asking (on boards) if I could install WIN 98 (original)from the CD I got with a previous computer (same reason, I am familiar with it and had no problems with it for over 2 years). And everyone keeps telling me I can't do it! And I should use the 2 "HP ASSIST" CDs that came with this computer. Which, they say will reformat my harddrive and reinstall WIN 98 SE and I can get a fresh start with it.

I've never reinstalled WIN before, and asked for advice about doing this elswhere in this forum. I just came back to find my question and see if anyone had responded, and found this.

I'm kind of wary of starting it, and getting into something I don't understand, or messing it up and not being able to go online and find help.

So, I haven't tried the reinstall (using any WIN version)yet.

The problems I've been having, which seem to be WIN98SE related are mainly I can't see java (all of a sudden it's gone) and a few weeks after I got the computer, when I "shrink" windows down to the taskbar, they sometimes disappear. Sometimes they just go off, and sometimes I can get them back by ALT and TAB.

I don't know if these are SE bugs others have had, or not?

And if they are, isn't reinstalling SE going to just bring them about again?

Sorry, TecSoul is I'm not supposed to respond to your question/answers. But it sounded so like what I'm trying to find out about.

Carrie
