When I boot-up sometimes the system loads straight through without any prolems, while other times it hangs at the point just before it should load the opening icons on the main screen. Other times it gets that far and goes right back to re-booting and either repeats the faults again or loads perfectly.
I've loaded up-to-date drivers for video and sound cards but no improvement. Any ideas pleae?

Find out what programs are loading at startup. These can be found in both Start > Programs > Startup
And by opening regedit and browsing to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
Quite often 2 programs that conflict on startup can cause this problem. Remove any programs that are not nessicary for startup and see if that improves the startup process.

Hi gpalmer711

I have tried the Start > Programs > Startup and found nothing in that section.
I ran the msconfig and went into the start menu. In there I un-ticked several boxes and will now see how the system works over the next few days.
My only worry is that I may un-tick too many and not be able to get into the windows system to re-tick those that need doing. Is there a way of knowing which programs are conflicting?

The only real way to determine what program if any is conflicting would be to disable one program at a time. If you get errors still with just one program disabled. re-enable that program and disable another one. If you want you can email me the list of programs that start up and I will give you my opinion. You should also check out the registry because that contains a list of software that starts up automatically that is not found anywhwere else. To check the registry you need to click on Start then Run. In the open Box type Regedit and then click on OK. The Registry editor should open, it is set out the same as windows explorer. Go the the following key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and list the software that you find there.

And remember if it doesn't work just flush it down the toilet. [Flush]

Hi Friend,

This may or may not help, but definitely won't hurt ...
