If this information is located elsewhere in these forums, I apologize in advance. I did some keword searches for ip telephony that didn't really turn up anything useful but that doesn't mean I didn't miss something.

We are in the process of migrating our offices to 96xx series IP Phones. Out of about 750 stations we are about half way there. Our primary server is an S8720. Remote sites are using G650 media gateways. I've been tasked with finding additional features and or uses for our IP Phones. For example, using Avaya's soft phone and I think live communication server, you cal dial a phone number from a PC by highlighting the number. I've only been told about this feature, I haven't investigated.

If someone can point me at any useful Avaya documentation, I would appreciate it. Or just reply with some features you use in your shop. Also, if anyone knows of any related classes offered by Avaya that would be useful in learning the full capacity/functionality the system offers us, that too would be great. We are scheduled to migrate to CM 5.x "sometime this year". we're using 4.x now but I am pretty sure we're past 4.0.

Anyway, thanks in advance. Looking forward to your feedback.

There are a number of features like IP softphone capabilities that really have nothing to do with the 9600 specifically.

You can do a number of softphone fuctions with an old 6400 sitting on your desk. It doesn't have to be a 9600.

Anyway, for softphone functions, I'd check out the Avaya One-X communicator software. We're experimenting with it here. It works to provide integration with browsers and Outlook contacts lists so users can soft-dial their phones. One-X communicator doesn't NEED a 9600. You can use it with just about any phone.

For 9600 phone features, check out the Push SDK. There's a nifty software development kit that can allow you to push messages or "advertising" (images) to your 9600 phones.

There's also the 4600 style LDAP integration that works with the 9600. It gives you an on-screen application that allows you to lookup names and phone numbers in your LDAP database. (We connected it to Active Directory.)

You should also get a copy of the Avaya One-X deskphone USB companion. It allows you to build portable station profiles that you save as files to a USB memory stick. When you insert the memory stick into the USB port on a 9600 station, it re-configures that station to be the station/extension of the profile. No other user intervention is necessary. It's a nifty tool for people who travel in your company. They can always have "their phone" no matter which office they're working in today.

Awesome, thanks for the feedback. This is exactly what I am looking for.

Other 9600 station tricks:

The Outlook contacts import tool: Extracts contacts from Outlook so you can import them to a 9600 station using a USB memory stick.
It's a bit tricky to work if you don't use Excel macros, but it's pretty good.

Using the One-X USB companion, you can import image files to your station to use as "wallpaper". (Not terribly good on monochrome screens, but not bad with color screens.)

You can also use the USB companion to create a "screen saver" file, so the phones in your office could show something like a company logo instead of the Avaya One-X logo.

Just create an image (Black and white images look best on the phone) and save it in the USB companion. Take that file from the location the companion saved the file, put it in your HTTP download location and change your 46xxsettings.txt file to say what the file name is:

################ AVAYA SCREEN SAVER SETTINGS ###################
##
## Idle time before the Avaya Screen Saver is activated (minutes).
## Number of minutes without phone activity to wait
## before the screen saver is activated. A value of 0 means
## the screen saver is never activated. The default is 240 minutes.
## This parameter does not apply to 16cc SIP phones.
##
## Note:
## This setting activates the Avaya Screen Saver which is
## different than the "idle screen" accessed by WMLIDLEURI.
## While it is possible to use WMLIDLEURI as an "idle
## screen", it is recommended that the SCREENSAVERON
## timer and the Avaya Screen Saver display be used for
## screen saver purposes.
##
SET SCREENSAVERON 240
##
## The filename of a valid JPEG customized screen saver image.
## 0-32 ASCII characters.
## Note: This parameter is supported on H.323 and R2.2
## release of SIP telephones.
##
SET SCREENSAVER logo.jpg
