96xx Screensaver 5

Hello Pros,

I'm trying to set a screensaver here on my shop's IP phones which are a mix of 9608, 9611g, 9621 and 9641 phones. I'm wanting to bring these phones to a potential sale to show them their company's logo and make them wet their pants.

I've uploaded jpeg (even though original pics say JPG?) images formatted to the right size and named them 96xxiposs, 96XXSCR and 9608SCR on the primary folder in my SD card, deleting the original images. I've reset a few of our phones, and re registered with no luck. I think I need to set the screensaver timer to lower than my backlight timer in the 46xx settings. This is where I'm stuck. I've never tried accessing the 46xx settings before and don't know how. I don't see them anywhere on my SD card. I found somewhere saying that you access them by going to web address

http://(server

address)/46xxsettings.txt. I do this but this is a read only text file. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Any help is appreciated.

if you open the

http://ipAddress/46xxsettings.txt

you will probably see on the top line <IP Address> auto generated and it is the default file.
take the 46xxsettings.txt and modify it to your liking and then upload it to the primary folder and reboot the system

Thanks for the info Westi. Yes when open the web page, I do get the IP address , auto generated and the default 46xx settings. I copied it to a notepad, edited the SCREENSAVERON timer from 240 to 1, saved it with the name 46xxsettings.txt and uploaded it to the primary folder on the SD card. I rebooted the IP Office but the settings don't seem to have taken. The screensaver does not come on after one minute and when I go to the web address, it still shows the screensaveron timers at 240. What am I missing?

You should probably use the embedded file management tool to download the settings file, and edit it directly (after making a backup of course). Then you can upload it back. Close the file tool and Manager, and reboot a phone to test. I had the same problem when I first tried this. Also, I found it useful to save the JPG with a different file name, and change the file name in the settings. You can watch the status dialogs as the phone boots to see if it picked up the new screen saver file settings.

in Manager go to File - Advanced - Embedded File management

but you have to make sure that your View is set to advanced

It is in Manager under File > Advanced > Embedded File Management. How did you upload the settings file without going to this menu?

Oh yeah, that's where I went. I thought you were talking about another utility that I didn't know about. So you're saying to upload the default 46xxsettings to the SD card, then edit it from there? Is the way I'm uploading it correct? Just copy the 46xxsettings to a .txt doc and upload that?

I always download the settings file using the tool instead of copy/paste from the browser into a new file just to be safe. A .txt file has several possible encoding formats that may not be compatible with the phones, so editing the original file is usually best. Maybe I'm too cautious, but....

You know you're getting old when you still worry about EBCDIC vs. ASCII encoding and carriage returns transferring properly in txt files.

No it sounds like a good way to do it. But now I can't delete the original file from the SD card, it says 'Method not allowed'.. May have to continue tomorrow.

Shouldn't need to delete it. Just upload the copy and it will be overwritten. Does it give the same error when you do that?

Download a new version of the 46xxsettings file from support.avaya.com> downloads> 46xx (should find a match).

Open and edit in notepad. Save As to your computer in documents and then upload to SD, overwriting original.
Reset handsets.

Make sure your file is small. N

Watch the file transfer to the handsets with TFTP filter in monitor. If the file transfers and the screensaver comes on, but with the default Avaya One X one, your file is still to large. It must be made and saved as a black and white. No more than 64Kb iirc.

OK, so I've downloaded the 46xx text from the support website, copied onto notepad, edited the screensaveron time to 1 minute, saved as '46xxsettings' in my documents and successfully uploaded to the primary folder on the SD card.

I rebooted the phone system, checked the 46xx file on the SD card and it says 1 minute for screensaveron, but the backlight will not turn off after 1 minute. So I can't tell if the image is successfully uploaded. I'm not at my shop to reboot the phone, so I'll try that tomorrow. I'm watching the screen of the phone on a camera remotely.

You have to reboot the phone to get the new settings file. You can reboot the phone from Monitor or from System Status Application. Start Monitor with all filters disabled and only services\HTTP enabled. Then you will see the phone getting 96xxHupgrade.txt, then 46xxsettings.txt and then you screensaver JPG. If there are new firmware or language files available you will see more files requested by the phone.

And remember SCREENSAVERON != BACKLIGHTOFF. Browse through the settings file you downloaded from support.avaya.com (it should also be in you manager directory) and look at the comments. They describe quite well what parameter will have what effect. It also describes how parameters work together.

I'm still having trouble. I started from scratch again. Downloading the 46xx file from support website. I edited the screensaveron timer to 1 minute. I uploaded that to my primary folder of the sd card. I then cleared my 9641 phone, re-registered it and it came up, but the backlight does not go away and the screensaver does not come on. Here's what I'm changing in the 46xx file, the "SET SCREENSAVERON" was at 480, I changed it to 1.

SCREENSAVERON specifies the number of minutes of idle time after which the screen saver will be displayed.
## If an image file has been downloaded based on the SCREENSAVER (H.323) or LOGOS and CURRENT_LOGO (for SIP)
## parameter, it will be used as the screen saver.
## Otherwise, the built-in Avaya one-X(TM) screen saver will be used.
## Valid values are 0 through 999; the default value is 240 (4 hours).
## A value of 0 means that the screen saver will not be displayed automatically when the phone is idle.
## This parameter is supported by:
## 96x1 H.323 R6.0 and later
## 96x1 SIP R6.0 and later
## B189 H.323 R1.0 and later
## 96x0 H.323 R1.0 and later, but not supported by the 9610
## 96x0 SIP R1.0 and later
## SET SCREENSAVERON 1
