9611g & Voice VLAN 1

Hi everyone

We have a scenario where the customer is moving to a new office and unfortunately limited on Cat5e/6 points. They would like to connect the PC’s to the back of the 9611g handsets and for this we understand that a Voice VLAN is required. We want to test this on our in house Avaya first so we have set up VLAN 102 for Voice and VLAN 1 (Native) for data on the Cisco SG500 switch. The port on the switch that IPO plugs into has been configured as untagged on VLAN 102, the ports that the 9611g’s plug into have been configured as Tagged on VLAN 102 and untagged on VLAN 1. Option 242 has been created in the Data DHCP server with the following string; MCIPADD=10.1.246.100,MCPORT=1719,TFTPSRVR=10.1.246.100,L2Q=1,L2QVLAN=102. We are using the IPO as the Voice DHCP server. We cannot get the phone to register to the IPO, we see the phone pickup DHCP on the Data before rebooting and displaying VLAN ID 102, the callserver address shows in the display but it gets to a point and just restarts again. I’m not sure why this is happening and where to go next? Do i need to use the 46xxsettings file in anyway? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Could be because the phone can't contact the HTTP server, or rather one isn't defined. Change your TFTPSRVR option to read HTTPSRVR=10.1.246.100 since you don't need TFTP for a 9611. If it still doesn't work there most likely an issue with VLANS/routing.

data vlan option 242 only needs the following L2Q=1,L2QVLAN=102 and possible vlantest=90

Voice vlan option 242 needs MCIPADD=10.1.246.100,MCPORT=1719,[bold]HTTP[/bold]SRVR=10.1.246.100,L2Q=1,L2QVLAN=102,VLANTEST=90

This may be a silly question but as the Avaya IPO is doing the DHCP for phones do I still need to add the option 242 string for the voice VLAN?

I assumed you were doing the DHCP for both VLANS from the same server.

Reasoning behind that is to only tell the phone to boot up on the correct VLAN and the DHCP there has the rest of the information for the phone

Um - Long time since I've touched an IP office, but does the internal DHCP server send the L2Q=1,L2QVLAN=102 as part of its own option 242?

You need to set VLAN in System -> LAN1 -> VoIP to Not Present.

Default = Not present. This option is applied to H.323 phones using the system for DHCP support. If set to Disabled, the L2Q value indicated to phones in the DHCP response is 2 (disabled). If set to Not Present, no L2Q value is included in the DHCP response.

The phones should get the VLAN ID from the data network and when they switch VLAN they will ask for DHCP on the voice network, they don't need the VLAN ID again.
