Just been clearing out my old stuff. Found a couple of 9600 modems along with installation CDs and an manual on AT codes. I think they will go to 19200. Does anyone still use these?

The modems haven't been used for at least 8 to 10 years. Nowadays most laptops/desktops have modems built in and I haven't used any of these either. It is just network to router and that is it.

I thought maybe I'll junk the hardware (pity since it still works) and just keep the manual. I can't give them to a charity shop since the charity shops will not accept electricals. I could debate the finer points that it is electronic not electrical but they won't appreciate the difference and the answer will still be no.

I have a 56K one in case my ADSL connection goes down, although my 3G Vodafone dongle will get me in now. Ebay has a few, although I don't see any bidders. Some of the earlier ones had modem chips which were useful to radio amateurs (like me!), if you were into making your own AX25 packet TNCs.

Donate them to your local electronics or radio club, or bin them...

Bidding ado is such sweet sorrow when it comes to the old 'puter junk. [cry]

I've had to give away, toss, donate, all that I could over the past year or so. Just had so much stuff built up, no way I could use it, and nobody else seems to want the old stuff anymore.... with good reason. The newer stuff is so fast and so (comparably) cheap.

Guess I'll have to look for a local school or electronics club. Just can't throw away good stuff.

I've still got 5.25" floppy drives and floppies but I'm keeping those because it is a great security feature: not many people have the equipment that can read them.

Yeah, there are places that still use them. Whether you can find somebody to give them to, or to sell them to, is an open question.

I've recently scrapped everything under 9600b.

I'm holding the floppies, too. All the way back to SSSD35s. Have some early stuff I want to ressurect for museum donations.

Yeah, when it comes to hording stuff, I am guilty as the rest of you...

I have an 8" FloppyDisk hanging on my wall alongside a 5.25" Floppy and a 3.5" one...

I also still have an old 8bit portable computer (actually 2) from CBM (SX-64 and D-128)...

also have a 33k Modem PCMIA card... but no 9600 baud or slower (darn that brings back memories Compuserve in the 80's and UseNet, good times then)...

oh well enough of the OFF TOPIC and reminiscence...

How to ask a question, when posting them to a professional forum.
Only ask questions with yes/no answers if you want "yes" or "no"

Just had a look again: they aren't actually 9600 modems: they're 56K modems. Only problem I see is that they communicate through the serial port and most PCs nowadays don't have serial ports.

Go on the Avaya Partner forum, their are always people looking for external modems for remote programming!

It is likely that those modems are more desirable than the current production ones. Earlier ones used matching transformers to transfer signals while the latest ones put signal levels directly to the line and are more fragile.

Yup Networking and Telco people still use them.
Netowrking for remote access to routers when they decide to throw a tantrum and Telco people to access the switches.
