Just curious I noticed that the 2420 digital sets have no backlight but the 9508 digital does. How is it that they were able to get one model to light up and the other one can not light up?

the reason i am asking is that I understand that with an IP set that requires a power supply or POE you get extra power to light up a set or provide color etc. but I thought that with digital sets lighting up the display was not possible i.e. the Nortel M and T series digital sets have never been back lit.

The 2420 is a very old model and in that time backlight was not a requirement.
The 14xx, 16xx, 95xx and 96xx phones all have backlight.
But for the 95xx phones you need to be on release 7.0 or higher.

Thank you. Is there a higher voltage on the line for the 95xx model to provide the extra power for the back light?

No extra voltage for 9500 series. It's just backlit where the older phones are not.

Indeed, it just uses some LEDs and they don't use much.

Oh ok. I was just curious as to the technology behind the backlighting. Since LED's have been around for a long time I am wondering why it took this long fr someone to realize they could be used on digital sets. That would have been a great help n many of the sets installed in the past if they would have had backlights. Fr example I can think of many security posts that have the lights out in their posts at night and other dimly lite offices, etc..

BTW how would you rate the 2420 and 5420 for performance, reliability and ease of use for the customer. I see they are still available NEW fr a pretty good price.

They are good but all new features will only be made for they new phones.
Expect software support for just another couple of years.
After that the support stops.

More down to cost and type of display.

Backlight on an LCD these days is probably very cheap compared to some years ago.

cost of the 2420's (and also the 5420's even though they were cheaper than the 2400 series phones) was quite a bit higher than the new 9508's are but all electronics have gone down in price so I have to concur with HSM on this.
Also competition has gotten more intense and companies try to get the advantage with cheap little improvements on their equipment.
