I have a compaq presario 1400 with WinXP Home 2002 W/sp2, 600MHz, 312MB of Ram, and have so many problems you could barely imagine. The one that is plauging me now is that in the past few weeks my computer, especially my Internet Connection, have been going extremely slow. I looked in TaskManager and discovered my CPU usage continually going to 100% it would stay there for tens of seconds or just waver around 90+. If I disconnect my internet connection it would drop to about 30% sometimes as low as 7% with no apps running but virus protection and firewall...However if I even move my mouse too fast CPU usage would jump by like 20-30%. Please Help Thanx. P.S. I've changed my paging file on main disk to up to 600MB with no change, and now use 0MB on main, but 4095 on external HD, however it reads that only 467 is allocated for all drives.

Download these 2 programs and run a full system scan with both in safe mode.

Also let the trend micro program when finished scanning and removing, to let it remove all temp files.

When done restart back into normal mode. Download hijackthis from the link below. Extract to desktop or prefered folder. Open, choose do a system scan and save a logfile and post the logfile on here. Unless your sure of what your doing dont attempt to fix anything as most items are legit.

You say the CPU jumps up when using the internet but what process in particular is hogging the CPU or is it iexplorer?

The Winsock fix repair is a suggestion that is worth a try: FAQ779-4625

Some general things to try.

See if System Restore will get you back to a restore point before your problem with Explorer.

Try Safe Mode (Do you have this problem in Safe Mode?).

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.

I just posted this in another thread, I don't suppose it applies, but I'll include it anyway?

Have you installed either of these Office Updates recently?

office2003-KB905756-FullFile-ENU.exe
office2003-KB913807-FullFile-ENU.exe

It is too early to say for sure but there may be some conflict caused by one or both of them?

I am also looking at the latest Macromedia Flash Player version 8 update as a suspect but I favor one of the first two for causing a slow down on this machine.

I have used a seperate adware, and spyware detector and the results came up nill. When My CPU Usage stays pretty close to 100% or at it, whenever I have a few windows open or even when I have morpheus running. With this program running SYSTEM usually takes up the CPU even though Morpheus stays at 7 or 8%. Now I cant even download anything because the CPU Usage is so high. Right now I have three windows of IE running with text based pages (no videos or ads or anything) yet iexplorer.exe is taking up from 85 to 92% of the CPU. When I have all programs closed but my anti-virus it goes down to about 30% but will constantly jump up to around 80% with System, ( think KAVPF.exe...Which was saying it was a system process but now says its a user process...CONFUSING), and System Idle process taking up most cpu...I pretty much know the function of Sys. Idle Proc. but it jumps high, even when I'm using other programs which are acting slow...If I exit out of my antivirus I get the same stuff really...It takes up alot of memory but rarely any CPU. So..I cant seem to restart in safe mode and when I try a clean boot It freezes at startup, and I have to power off and start in Last Known Good Config. I have not updated with any of those you listed, but I have used Macromedia Flash Player 8...What is it exactly that electronicsfreak wanted me to do...what are those programs? Thanks for the help so far... Also my computer started asking me to install the PCI Simple Communications Controller, but when I try to search for the required drivers or software or whatever my computer cant find them, and I went to device manager list and it shows up as an unknown device, but a PCI Simple Communications Controller...

KAVPF.exe is the Kaspersky Anti-Hacker firewall.

electronicsfreak suggested you download and run 'Ewido' (an anti-malware program) and the 'Trend Micro' anti-spyware program, both in Safe Mode.

After doing that, electronicsfreak suggested you download and run 'HijackThis', a program that reports on all the programs and service that run from startup.

The purpose of all this is to see whether there is any malware running in the background that may have hidden itself from 'Task Manager'.

What 'seperate adware and spyware detector' did you use?

Hope this helps...

I used swatit, which someone posted elswhere in this forum was a good program... One weird thing was that I had three internet explorer windows open and iexplorer.exe was taking all my CPU, even when I was sitting without actually using the programs, or even when I was, but all of a sudden, after a LONG time, like hours, it started using only a small portion of the CPU time... I don't really know what I should be expecting with my 600MHz Celeron processor anyway...But this never happened before thought, that's my concern...Can yoou just buy a new processor for a laptop? I know how to replace my RAM, (which really seems to exceed everything else I have 312MB, lol) But how can I replace Clock Speed?

PCI Simple Communications Controller is probably related to any modem you have connected.

Some information on Morpheus.

Make sure your options in IE/ Tools/ Internet Options/ Advanced are correct.

Uncheck the boxes for "Install on Demand" for IE and Other programs (two boxes).

Try running temporarily with the third box "Enable Third Party Browser Extensions" unchecked and see how this goes.

"This specifies that you want to disable features you installed for use with Internet Explorer that may have been created by companies other than Microsoft.
If you encounter problems with Internet Explorer that you cannot resolve, you can use this option to help determine if third-party features are causing the problems without uninstalling the feature. You must restart Internet Explorer after turning this option on or off."

If that stops your errors, you will know where the trouble is.

Replacing your processing is unlikely to solve your current problems which seem more related to what software is loaded and running on your machine, especially that of a malware kind.

Thanks Rick for clearing that up.

HalfBloodPrince, if you can please run those programs I said for you to and post the hijackthis log. As getting a new processor wont solve your problem. Replacing a processor without stopping whats eating up your resources is like giving new lungs to a smoker.
