8MB Buffer Shows Up As C:

Ok guys, here goes....
I just bought the Western Digital HDD 120G 7200 w/8mb buffer. Now my problem is when i installed WinXP, my 8mb buffer is showing as C:, and the rest of my disk is on D: (including WinXP). I did not partition the drive when i got it. Now when trying to install SP1, there is no option to change the installation path, so I always get the "Not enough space on C:" error. I've already tried to change the drive letters using My Computer, Manage, Computer Management, Disk Management, right-click the drive, Change Drive Letter and Paths, Change, Assign the following drive letter... but it wont allow me to change the drive letter. "Windows cannot modify the drive letter of your system volume or boot volume."

1- Can i safely delete the two partitions to create just one partition and use the full drive?

2- Is there a way that I can install SP1 to D:?

3- Is there another way to change the drive letters?

Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated. Thanx in advance.

Just a quik dumb question, how do you know that the 8mb C: is the cache. I read somewhere that the O/S always leaves 8mb of space for its own use or something to that effect, I doubt that you are seeing your cache buffer.

I know this may not help but it may shine some light onto your situation.

Well, before I even installed the OS (WinXP), I had checked fdisk and yup, there it was... two partitions. One has only a few MB's, but the other had 116G. I think I might just put my old 20G back in, just to use for my OS. I'll use the other as storage... Although I would still like to have only one partition on the larger drive.

It's possible that the drive had been previously used and returned. If you install from scratch I'd try deleting all the partitions in fdisk before running the install.
