I am running Brightstor Arcserve v9 and the backups of our SQL server usually go off without a problem. We have the SQL agent installed and we have not made any configuration changes or user/password changes to any accounts. Once in a while, a backup will come back with job status failed with E8604 in the logs. Here is what brightstor pops up when I examine the log entry:
---
Error 8604
8604 Failed to start backup. (DBNAME=object name, EC=error message/code)

Module:
Backup Agent

Reason:
Failed to start backing up an object (DBNAME=object name) since:

1. Backup Agent failed to put a backup object in a backup mode or
2. The security for Backup Agent doesn't have enough privilege to precede a backup.
---

I dont think it's #2 since backups work on other days.

anyone have any ideas or can point me in the right direction? Many thanks

err you gave us the generic error message - we would need the specific error message to take a guess :) E8604 is quite a common error message - the EC= bit may give you more of a hint as to what the problem might be.

oops, sorry, yeah it did lack alot of info...

Heres from the brightstor activity log:

---
Failed to start backup. (DBNAME=dbase, EC=server:Backup Agent Error - (73) "SQL Server error. Please cehck the log file DBASQL.LOG".)

Failed to start backup. (DBNAME=dbase, EC=server:[SQL Server] szSqlState=37000,fNativeError=3013, errMsg=[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]BACKUP DATABASE is terminating abnormally.)
---

Here is snippet from dbasql.log on the database server:
