I am trying to bring up a an 8434DX phone on a TN2224B board. I bought it refurbished. (I've haven't seen or used these phones before now)

I have the MSP1 power supply that shows -48vdc is good on pins 7 and 8 of the 8 cond jack.

I have the sets wired to pins 4 and 5 of the 8 cond jack. I tried reversing polarity with no success.

But the sets stay dead. No lights..nothing. Shouldn't I see something when the power supply is connected?

If I install one of my 6416D+ phones on the same circuit, the 6416D+ works fine (as far as a 6416D+ can programmed as an 8434D can)

I tried to use the spare 8434DX...it stays dead too.

I may be overlooking something very basic...but I have no reference point. ?

The 8434 will work as a 2 wire or a 4 wire setup. The programing will have to be for a 8434DX though. The power supply is for the display on that set. I would work this off my frame and try to fix it their first and then out to the station.

I actually am working at the frame. No station caling here. It's in a lab.

Should the power supply give some sign of life? It's completely dead at the MDF.

Even though people in this forum swear otherwise, when I use to work techhelp me, numerous Avaya outside techs told me that once a phone is connected to 4 wire, it will not work on 2 wire. So maybe this phone was connected to 4 wire before? Was the other 8434 working somewhere else?

orypecos, Now that's interesting. It could have been tested ona 4-wire board before it was shipped to me. I'll have to check with the NACR folks...

I have heard that as well if the phoes was working as a 4 wire it won't work as a 2 wire phone???

Does not really make sense though does it. If you have an old 4 wire card maybe you should try it as a 4 wire.

I have been in the process of removing all of our 4 wire sets and rewiring them to 2 wire stations for about 2 years now. Whenever we have someone that wants to move one we change the port off the TN2181 to the TN 2224B packs. My reasoning is freeing up carrier space and cable pairs. I have run into that a couple of times where one will not work as a 2 wire setup, but the majority work fine.

Yes, this is strange..
I have 48v on pairs 7 and 8
I have T/R from the TN2224B on pairs 4 and 5 and reversed them as well...still the phone stays dead. Hmmnnnn..

Thanks for all your feedback..

I have found that when a 84xx series phone is used on a 4 wire digital line pack for a long while it will no longer work when connected to a 2 wire digital line pack. They seem to bed themselves to 4 wire operation and there was nothing you could do about it

multibus2, everyone,

I'm getting replacements shipped tomorrow. It sounds like the feedback you give regarding the 4-wire is the only answer that seems possible. Unless they are just completely DOA, but the refurb manager thinks it is unlikely....live long enough you'll see everything.

Fyi, I found the problem. It was in the Panduit RJ45's

They are not numbered. Great idea. ??

Anyway when I thought I was using pins 4 and 5 they were actually coming upo on pins 3 and 6 to the station.

Oh well..alls well that ends well...

Speechguy -- was the power adapter required for the display to come up on your 8434DX? I'm in the same boat, in a sense, where I can't get a unit to come up, and wondering if its dead.

If the phone works , but the display doesn't; the 48v are missing(on pin 7&8 of the RJ45)
What also seems to happen very often with these sets is the following:
There are 2 fuses on the bottom of the board.
1 of these seems to blow very easily when the phone is used on 4-wire.
This does not seem to influence operation as 4 wire, but the set refuses to work on 2-wire after.
Just replacing the blown fuse will get it to work again 90% of the times.

neilmax,

The 8434DX phone got dial tone and the 1st call appearence had a red status light with the TN2224, and w/o the power supply connection. No display at all w/o power supply.
