I have purchased some Xerox 8400 ink, Genuine, in the box, unopened. I believe.

I have heard rumors that there are some illicit companies out there that have gone to the level of creating the xerox box and labelling and selling generic ink in this packaging. As I look at two Xerox boxes in hand, one of them has a hologram sticker on it, the other does not.

Has anyone heard of this happening? Is this even a realistic practice? My first thought is that to make the packaging and labelling would be too high a cost and would easily offset the profit on the ink.

Bad rumors or serious problem?

I havent heard of that yet but I wouldnt put it past anyone to do so. The ink cubes should be shaped a certain way to fit in the hole. Media Science is usually only half right (flat on one side instead being of shaped like the hole) and wont have the # on the bottom. They are flat on the bottom instead of being a v shape(can cause ink loader jams and on the 85xx will cause errors).

I've also not heard of anyone manufacturing wax and duplicating the coping of the boxes to fool people into thinking they are buying genuine.

I am a reseller for these printers, and supplies. I've checked my stock, and all of mine have a rectangular silver hologram label that reads Xerox in large letters, and if tilted correctly, you can read the word "genuine."

I would recommend contacting Xerox and asking them if there is a way to veriefy your supplies are genuine, either through some batch number on the packaging, etc.

I'll check with Xerox. I found a box that does not have the hologram and two ink sticks that do not have a number on the bottom (while all the others do.) All the sticks do look correct in terms of shape and size.

Thank you both for the input.

Update on my Authentic ink issue...

Per Xerox, every box of 8400 ink MUST have the hologram sticker. Sort of. Depends on which person I speak with.

I have a box of Magenta that does not have the hologram. I called xerox and they verified from my description of the barcodes and all the details on the box that it was authentic. The company from whom I bought the ink is an authorized Xerox reseller. So I feel better about that ink.

Re: hologram- The first Xerox person I spoke with said they all have the hologram, but she seemed to hedge her answer a bit. The second person I spoke with seemed very knowledgeable about after market issues (ie. lawsuits...) and legitimate product identification. But she couldn't remember when they started using the hologram.

Verdict on the hologram- I guess if you have the sticker, great. If not, it may still be authentic ink, just verify who the seller is.

Any Xerox people out there who know the final truth on this? I love our 8400 and have no desire to experiment with aftermarket ink.
