Help!

1. Tektronix is telling us that for our 840 printer to NOT use off-brand ink, as there are known problems with damaging the print head. Is this real? The price difference on the supplies is enormous!

2. With the service contract running $600 on this thing, are we better off going without it, and buying a new version if it dies?

3. What would you replace the 840 with? We really like the print quality, and print our own brochures, so we want something that can print heavy stock in a professional manner.

Thanks so much for your help!

How old is the printer?

If you're on your first years Service contract, then DON'T use other ink.

If you're on your second or above service contract, Do it.! If ya think about it, other manufactures out there would not jeopardize their product in a huge way as to damage the printer if it didn't work.

And yes, your option #2 above would be the way to go. With the replacement for this being a Xerox 8200 coming in at $1,800 and HP's 4600 or photo printers for around the same cost.

Your call. Keep in mind this is only my opinion. (Long time user/technican/fellow "Why did I buy this printer")

Medicus,
Did you use the knock-off ink? If so, what happened? Have you tried using another 'series' ink, such as the 850, in your 840?
