Recently our Cisco 831 home network router was power cycled. When it completed rebooting, it did not load startup config but rather just loaded the minimum config and reverted into initial set-up.

I successfully copied start to run (verified by sh run), but the setting didn't seem to work. Now even after running the set-up script prepared some weeks back by Burt, I can's seem to get it to work at all.

I tried to reset back to factory specs, but now it goes into initial set-up every cold boot and I have managed to lose the working startup config.

So what did I do wrong (if that can even be ascertained) and what can I do to restore the router back to operational status?

Fortunately I have a fallback router, but want to get back to the Cisco.

Thanks in advance.

You need to change your configuration register to 0x2102

router#config t
router(config)#config-register 0x2102

Then do a wr mem and reboot

OK, but what do you mean by "Then do a wr mem and reboot"? (I don't have a depth of understanding of Cisco)

Thanks.

wr mem
just saves your config..

if you have already done that though i wouldnt do it because it will erease whatever is stored in your startup config..

the problem with your config register right now is that it is telling the router to ignore the startup config.. that is why you are booting up to a blank config every time...

So are you saying that if I wanted to, I could re-key the set-up script again and copy it to start without worrying about what is there now?

Its my intent to get the router going enough to run SDM. I'll do a more detailed set-up through the GUI. (I know, its probably not the optimal way, but I'm not that Cisco-savvy.)

ya if you boot it up as it is now.. and enter your config
and then do a wr mem
it will save this new config to the startup..
it will overwrite whatever is there now..
just be sure to then change the config register back to 0x2102 so that it will load that config going forward..

I like it. Will give it a try tomorrow.

Thanks to all for the assistance.

Configuration register is 0x2142
This is the main problem. "wr mem" is the same as "copy run start", but "copy run start" gives you the option of naming the configuration. Not necessary to name it, so "wr mem", or simply "wr" will do the same thing...
router>en
router#conf t
Then configure the router...when finished
router(config)#config-reg 0x2102
router(config)#exi
router#copy run start
Or
router#wr
Once the config register is set, you won't have to set it every time, but you must do a "wr" in order to save it.

Burt

This thing is rigged ... Burt gets a star for saying the same thing I said ... hahaha just kidding.

lol thats that way this thing works..
and just to add a note to above..

Burt.. once the config register is changed.. you do not need to wr mem to save it. the config register is not part of the startup config.

youll notice that if you go

r2#conf t
Enter configuration commands, one per line. End with CNTL/Z.
r2(config)#confi
r2(config)#config-register 0x2142
r2(config)#end
r2#sh ver

That is true, however most of us have just gotten in the habit of doing a wr mem after any change. =)

It was a bit of an ordeal, but both the routers are back to normal operation. (I have two 831s.)

I have a follow-up question about Cisco and DHCP for a different thread.

Thanks all for your help. As they say at the office, "Priceless..."
