are you adding the shelf to a column? if so power is not a concern. if your adding a pedestal power need to be considered..

For an AC column you will need to turn power off for that column to add the shelf. Go to LD 37 first and DIS TTY 0, this will turn off the alarm monitoring. Then turn the power off on the column. remove the cap and temp sensor and wiring harness. Then you can put the new shelf in. then follow john's posting to add the shelf in software. After everything is in place and cables are run then you can power on the column.
i don't (have never) powered down a col to add a shelf. just remove the xms monitor card and put the shelf on. i added a couple that way about a month ago
my 81c is an ac switch and yes the col power plug is hot for that. as long as the power supplies are not plugged in, your only powering up the cable itself. 0 current flow, 0 problems..

DANGER OF ELECTRIC SHOCK
In a DC-powered system, power to the column can remain on during the following procedures. In an AC-powered system, however, power to the entire column must be shut down throughout the procedures.
There is also a procedure in this NTP to follow for adding the shelf. Large System Installation and Configuration Document Number: 553-3021-210. Look for Adding a Module to a Column.
yep i have read the book, but i've always done it the same way. you would almost have to try to get into power to get shocked on that procedure.. thanks for the saftey reminder, not everyone has the same comfort level working with power. i find dc a lot worse. i guess my time in the central office and seeing what dn at half a meg can do when you bump the wronge tool to ground can do.. needless to say the man lost his arm and was blind for almost a year... my ears rang for a month
If the system is DC then should i check the power for system or go on adding the ipe shelf to the column.
The nortel manual says that one ipe module needs 460 watts power. since i am adding ipe module . i think i should check the drain for system also in case of DC powered systems.
drain = total power/input power
here input power = 48 v
you can check the power supply for total watts out, but i have never installed one with less the 50 percent room for growth.. the rule of thumb i use, check everything that can go wronge, the thing that burns you will usually be the one you forgot...
