I have a laptop with windows xp on it and i have a inbuilt 802.11B wireless card in it. i recently reformated the computer and to my horror i couldn't connect to the network. i spoke to the IT admin and he said that i would have to re-reformat.

THE PROBLEM ::
I am detecting the wireless around the school.
I have the necessary passwords and authentication
--> When i try to 'repair' the connection it cannot change the IP which needs to be changed
--> i have disabled the "IEEE8... whatever" thingy

What should i do!!!

please help me

Wireless LAN connectivity in Windows XP is hard to accomplish. For the most part, it just takes a lot of messing around with the settings. However, I need a few more specifics than you have presented here.

First, I assume that your computer can see the wireless connections, but you cannot get access to it. Also, you mentioned trying to change the IP address. What is the IP address now and what should it be, does the network use DHCP? Is WEP enabled and do you have the encryption key? Finally, who set it up for you before and is that person available now.
