Seemingly out of nowhere, my server dies and no one can log in to MAX (our ERP using pervasive) and neither can I on the server. We're running Windows Server 2000 with all available updates, service packs and patches. I've reinstalled the engine and am still having the issue. Out of nowhere, the db becomes unresponsive and new client login attempts time out and MAX throws Btrieve Config.dat file not open errors, even on the server.
The fix is to stop the 2 Pervasive services and start them again. Nothing helpful is in the logs pinpointing the exact problem, but I will post what the logs say after the restart. It seems to only catch the timeout errors when I attempt to start the client MAX application on the server itself. Also, the Control Center on the server doesn't even show its a Pervasive Server when this happens (until I restart the services and open it up again).

Here are the log items that seem to relate to this issue:

> The workstation shows file cannot be opened, while the server shows btrieve error 3012...
What the 3012 from the Pervasive tools? If not, what did they report? A 3012, means the engine is not accessible. It's either not running or there isn't one installed. Are NTDBSMGR.EXE and W3SQLMGR.EXE running?

> It's 8.7 sp3... how do I verify?
Check the version of NTDBSMGR.EXE, W3DBSMGR.EXE, W3ODBCEI.DLL and on the client W3ODBCCI.DLL.
They should be versioned as 8.70.

8.70.14.0 is the version on both the server and the clients.
PCC lets me in just fine when I use it on the server and when I use it on the workstation in question. The DSN checks out.
When I try to run a crystal report tho, it fails.
When I try to run it on the server, it fails with that 3012 error. -- more on this, PCC on the server doesn't show the MAXDAT DSN in the clients (the clients is pretty empty) but the client is configured to use the server engine first..

When I try to run it on the workstation in question, it fails with error 171... I don't ever set user/pass in crystal.. why is this happening?

if I can fix this 171 error, I can be stable again, for now.
As for the server, I'm thinking it's a configuration issue with the pervasive client settings... please review and let me know why crystal would fail with 3012:

On the workstation in question, I can read and write data just fine in Pervasive SQL Data Manager.
I tried reinstalling the pervasive 8.7sp3 client and when it got to the analyzer, I had it run all tests. The transactional tests fail 171. This is on a reinstall! I have that analyzer still open now and I just confirmed that Pervasive SQL Data Manager still lets me read and write data just fine.

What am I missing? My computer and user can read/write data to the max share just fine too, so it's not a file system permissions thing...

Enable AutoReconnect"="No"

Not sure if this is supposed to be set to "YES"

Why not delete the Crystal ODBC DSN; reboot the server; and create the Crystal ODBC DSN again. It appears that the network setup is the primary concern.

From my Business Decisions notes, I recall that we should reboot a server after creating any ODBC connections (read olde school!!) for Crystal Reports.

Surgite!

Are you pre-loading the Pervasive Client with:

C:\PVSW\BIN\W3DBSMGR.EXE –SRDE

Thanks!

I shouldn't have to reboot the server for a new odbc connection if the connection tests ok. That's crazy talk.
Besides, most other clients in the office are fine, I'm trying to troubleshoot this one.
I'm sure it's to do with this issue of ddf... I tried creating a new crystal report and accessing the ddf directly, and I got an error 171 then it prompted me for an Access password. This may be due to crystal thinking it's an Access db file I'm trying to open after the error 171.
Either way, how do I solve? I've now reinstalled both the pervasive client and the Max client on this computer, so it's not that..

C:\PVSW\BIN\W3DBSMGR.EXE –SRDE
gives me error 8520 timeout.

Running the "C:\PVSW\BIN\W3DBSMGR.EXE –SRDE" command shouldn't be needed on a CLient. That command starts the Workgroup engine normally.

THe only thing I know of that causes a 171 when security is not enabled is a virus. I've seen where the IPC$ share was deleted and PSQL returned a status 171.

Just to confirm, on the machine getting the 171 from Crystal, you can use the PCC to access data. Can you use the Pervasive Function Executor to open a Btrieve file on the server?
In Crystal, are using UNC or a drive letter to connect to the PSQL files? WHat happens if you create a Client DSN on the client workstation pointing to the server's Engine DSN and then use the DSN in Crystal (and use ODBC rather than the direct Btrieve drivers)?

I tried the function executor to open a btrieve dat file and no luck, same 171 error. Ditto for file.ddf and this was opening the file through unc.
I have the same trouble whether I try unc or a mapped drive letter when using crystal.
Using just ODBC in crystal works fine. Unfortunately the Max client doesn't use ODBC, so it still fails.

this workstation (named "deploy") shares a folder on the network (one we use for sharing isos we've backed up) as well as a shared folder for Kaspersky administration kit remote installs. I can browse both folders properly on other workstations when I type \\deploy in explorer. So IPC$ on my workstation is working just fine. Since others can get into Max fine too, I don't believe the IPC$ on the max server is troubled..
I am running Kaspsersky which is quite good at catching viruses, so I'd be surprised if one got through. Also, I've not made any configuration changes to it in months, so it's not that blocking me...

Ok, changing the client settings on the max server in PCC from "Workstation only" to "try server first then workstation" allows me to open the file.ddf in the function executor.
AND the Max client now works on the server. So that was a configuration issue there.

Why the heck is it happening on my deploy workstation?

how do I rerun the pervasive system analyzer without reinstalling?

relational tests work fine, but the transactional ones don't!

I figured out the PSA utility, it was free on Pervasive's site. I used the same paths as the installer does and the relational tests work just fine, as does the TCP/IP test, but the transactional tests fail after initialize (and pass on clean up) with that 171 error.
This happens after restarting and re-associating with the domain, etc.

PSA is not the best choice for testing/troubleshooting. It's very limited in what it can test.

Use the Function Executor instead. Try to open the FILE.DDF in the MAX data directory. Does it give the 171? What about FILE.DDF in the Pervasive DEMODATA directory on the server.

same error on both, 171. the file.ddf in the max data directory is what I've been trying, and what's necessary for the max client to work.

I restarted the transactional service on the server but it didn't seem to help. Same errors, etc.

If only one machine gets this 171 error, there's something different about this machine. COmpare the settings between a working and non-working system.

I'll do that.
In the mean time I've converted all my scheduled reports to run using ODBC and that's working for now.
