Ok...It give me headache to get this up.

I bought a used 7044-170 (BOS level sh000808), no OS, no hard drive. So I bught a Quantum 18.4 Ultra3 SCSI drive and AIX 5.1

After power up and 'F1' I can see the following lines in SMS:

Integrated SCSI cntlr id=7(p1/z1)
18210 MB harddisk id, lun=0,0
Integrated SCSI cntlr id=7(p1/z2)

Not sure why the second line on the same SCSI id? I assume the SCSI id and drive is OK with the machine.

Anyway, it does not boot from AIX 5.1 CD1 at all. I downloaded the system microcode updates and made two floppys on a windows machine and one CDROM update disk. Update thru SMS's update utility did not go thru (show a red ! code after 2 minutes with the first disk, 44x70_B1).

Now, someone nice enough to tell me exactly how to proceed this. Do I have to buy a AIX 4.3.3 ? Would that CD directly bootable? I really need to compile some c++ code in AIX.

yes, I am new to rs6000/AIX game.

Appreciate any helps.

Mike

battery is mounted in the middle of the main board. It's a 3V lithium cell, pry it out of its holder with a flat plastic knife or sth. Screwdriver can be used also, but make sure you don't shortcircuit the battery.

On our 170, the gfx adapter is a short PCI adapter, which is fastened to the chassis just like any other PCI adapter, just unscrew and lift out of the PCI slot.

If you have a full-size adapter card, maybe it is held in place at the front of the box by a black plastic retainer, but you can flip that piece of plastic out of the way by pushing a lever (in the middle of it) downward and pivoting the retainer forward. Then lift the adapter card out of its PCI slot as you would do on any PC.

But as I said earlier, it is not really necessary.
By clearing NVRAM, you put the box in an "initial" state, which makes it a lot easier to install/choose console/...

There is also the possibility to select console from the ServiceProcessor menu's - look and see in there if you like.

hi p5,

I made a diag cd and updated system/service firmware after booting with it.

To update CD-ROM's microcode, I need to use 'web_microcode.bin'...Genucode to load the microcode (a bin file). But I dont know how to load/run the Genucode from diag cd boot session:
------------------------------------------
GENERIC MICROCODE DOWNLOAD SERVICE AID 802207

ERROR: Unable to restore 'genucode' from device fd0. Check
the restore media.

To return to device selection menu, press Enter.
------------------------------------------

I used winzip to unzip the .bin file and copied to a floppy.

I am getting little closer.

I really need aix 4.3.3. to upgrade the microcode.

Can anyone spare or burn a set for me? I will pay the cost or help a 'programming task' in return.

I am a very good coder for c++, java, c# among others, windows or unix.

Update:

Bought a 4.3.2 (after, installed Fedora Core 4, but failed to boot up) and updated the CD microcode.

Then, installed AIX 5.1. Now, I am on my way.

Thanks all who helped or answered my thread.

ps. No wonder 99% use Windows ;)

I'm glad you are up and running, now you will find it was worth all the effort.
Well done for persisting with it.
Welcome to the world of AIX !
