HI,

Seems like on this model ,pressing "5" during boot does not cause the system to boot from CD.

AIX 5.2,ML08.

Any ideas ?

Press the numeric 1 key after the word keyboard is displayed and before the word speaker is displayed.

MIke,

"1" brings me to SMS.I do not want it - I want to press any button ("5" in the past) to boot from CD directly.

Has this server been partitioned or set-up previously using HMC?

Hi,
In the documentation on
i found something about function keys
Hope it helps

Primary control panel functions
The primary control panel functions are defined as functions 01 to 20, including options to
view and manipulate IPL modes, server operating modes, IPL speed, and IPL type.
The following list describes all of the available primary functions:
Function 01: Display selected IPL type, system operating mode, and IPL speed
Function 02: Select IPL type, IPL speed override, and system operating mode
 Function 03: Start IPL
 Function 04: Lamp Test
 Function 05: Reserved
 Function 06: Reserved
 Function 07: SPCN functions
 Function 08: Fast Power Off
 Functions 09 to 10: Reserved
Functions 11 to 19: System Reference Code
Function 20: System type, model, feature code, and IPL type

At the SMS main menu, choose Select Boot Options and check to see if the intended boot device is correctly specified in the boot list.

Kooi,

Thanks, but this panel gives the regular IBM chinese staff ...not something I will recommend my customer to play with ...
Mike - yes ,the IDE CD is properly configured.
This is not a fault - ALL systems of this new type behave like that .

Hi,
One more try .......press 6 during boot
Walter

Behave like what? 5 and 6 don't work?
Please let us know what to expect from them.
There must ba a function key / numeric key to select the default service mode boot list, what is it?
All I meant was, if not 5 or 6, what is it, if you can't find it, ask IBM (under warranty) and let us know.
How do you boot from CD then?

DukeSSD ,

The reply from kooi above shades some hint on the operating panel functionality - but this looks very awkward to - once you will see it,you will understand.
Have a look at the pdf he mentions.

I have ended up using "1" in SMS to choose the default boot device (CD0),takes a good 5 steps ...

Hmm, seems this is the shape of things to come.
But if the new machines still support 1 for SMS, then why not support 5 and 6 like they used to!
I see the normal / service boot can now be selected from the SMS boot menu for hard drives and the like:
Seems to me they are slowly turning into i5 / AS400s.
Shame they are developed in the Rochester (i5 / AS400) plant, but I suppose it keeps these guys in a job (because the i5/AS400 won't for much longer ;-)
