Hey all,

I plan to take the 293 exam in a couple of weeks because the content is similar to the 291.

Can anyone who has taken the exam recently offer any advice, waht to expect? is it much harder than the 291 etc.

Much appreciated in advance.

I'm also preparing for this exam at the moment. In the reading I've done and some practice tests there is a lot of ceritificate (auto enrollment in particular) stuff and a lot of security questions, to be more precise how to apply security templates, which ones to use for certain security settings you may need.

I haven't taken it recently, but when I took the 70-293, it was relatively easy compared to 70-291.

In fact, I'd say that (other than 70-299 which is an elective) 70-291 was the most difficult MCSE exam to date. Of the core MCSE exams, 70-293 was the least difficut, since many of the topics had already been covered.

That said, don't underestimate the 70-293, or any MCSE exam. It's expensive and frustrating to fail. Adequate preparation is well worth the investment.

Smooth23,

Don't know if you've done this yet but I sat this a couple of days ago and passed.

Loads of PKI stuff on there but on the whole easier then 70-291.

An old thread to add to I know, just done 293 today and it was alot tougher than I expected.
Questions I got where pretty evenly spaced out over all the objectives, had a few simulations including modifying local policies to block web content and tools, enabling legacy client communication with 2003 servers, cert management etc.

Knowledge from 291 is essential to pass this, make sure your fluent with when to apply 'authentication' measures and 'encryption', lots of tricky questions that try to through you.

Good luck!

JonesNW,

Thanks for the post. I'm re-taking this exam on the 20th Jan, I’d preferred to have to book this earlier but everywhere is booked up. people must be trying to get there passes in before Christmas.

I agree with everything you wrote, especially on the authentication and encryption side. I have since done some hands on stuff at work and am feeling a bit more confident, still need to do more prep though!!

I have three exams to go until I am MCSE qualified, 70-293, 70-297 and exchange 2003 (think the exam code is 70-288) so I’ve decided to go ahead and book them in Jan 07 as i really want to get this under my belt by Q1 07. Having them booked will motivate me to get preparation underway. I seem to have a habit of having a break after each pass which I want to get out of.

Hello again,

I did pass with 760. I was hoping for a better score, but by the end of the exam on the day I was happy with anything with a pass grade!!! I found my weaknesses in 293 were centred around clustering and certificate use, I don't have to much 'hands on' experience with either so a few questions I had to go on gut instinct. You can imagine how pleased I was when I got a simulation question on cert authority management!!!

Smooth23 - I tend to find I get too comfortable when leaving time between exams, as soon as I finished 291 I booked 293 without even looking at a book. I dont think I'll do that again though, was too stressful leading up to the exam.

I'm off to sit 70-622 beta now. I couldn't find any decent literature on the exam, and have very little experience with vista, so wish me luck!!!

Thanks for your comments.

It will be interesting to see how you got on with the Vista beta exam!!!

did you pay for the exam. i thought beta exams were free!1

good luck

JonesNW,

Congrats on passing 70-293.

Does Microsoft give you instant pass/fail scores on beta exams, or do they make you wait like CompTIA does? I can't say I've taken a MS beta exam, but I'm interested in hearing some feedback on the Vista exam.

The Beta exam consists of 80 questions in the same 3-4 hour time period. Its predecessor Microsoft Certified Desktop Support Technician consisted of two exams (70 271 - 272) this seems to be a combination of the two Vista Equivalents.

I got a promotional code emailed to me so it didn't cost anything, and you don't get the results for a few weeks as it has to be marked be an examiner. They read through your answers’, deem what’s right and not, and use those collective answers once the exam goes live to automatically mark future exam.

The content was nothing like I was expecting, a few questions related to group policy template compatibility (Deploying Vista and XP security templates, must admit I need a lot more study on Vista to understand everything!). Lots of questions relating to user access control (UAC) and a fair bit relating to Bitlocker and domain integrated lockdown using Trusted platform module compliant (TPM) systems. That’s as much as I can remember of the content but if I remember anything else I’ll add another post.

I'm not expecting a pass grade on this at all, so my plan now is to finish security 2003, then consider going for the vista stuff once the literature is released and it’s a live exam.

Hope this was useful!

I am also writing exam 70-193 on the 22 February 2007,I have got a friend who has written 70-293 he says 70-293 by the way he got 790 on this exam, but I will only beleive this as soon as I have written 70-293.

JonesNW,

Thanks for the info. It looks like Microsoft only sent vouchers to people who had MCDST. That's what I'd heard, and they certainly didn't send me one.

Even if they had, with no material out there to study, I wouldn't expect a pass if I had taken it.

Well I finally got round to passing the 70-293 exam Saturday!

I found it pretty difficult! I prepared for two weeks prior to the exam! I definitely wont be leaving it long before I take the 70-297, think I’ll make the most of being in study mode and just crack on!

There were lots of PKI and encryption questions, a simulation on legacy client authentication and another on certificate authorization. Got a load of DNS/WINS questions and quite a few on remote access!

I'm moving on to the 70-297 so I’ll start a new thread on this for any feedback!

Wishdiak,

Thanks, yeah i passed the 70-294 with a score of 850 back in July 06. i only have the 297 and 284 (Exchange 03) to go before i'm MCSE!

You studying for the 294 then?

Smooth23,

I passed 70-294 back in November '06. I'm currently working on 70-298 which will be my last Microsoft exam for a while.

MCSE: Security should be enough until I get more experience.

Smooth23, well done on the pass!
I'm currently preparing for 70-294, so any tips would be appreciated!

I'm starting to think i'd have been better off doing 294 first, noticed a lot of the content in this exam is tested in 291/293 (one really nasty one relating to custom mods to AD schema if I remember right!).

Once 294's done I’m thinking of doing security + and 70-298, will that be enough to gain MCSE, then the ISA exam to gain security MCSE?
