294. You're the network administrator for Wingdings International. The Wingdings network consists of a main office network and a branch office network. The offices are connected by a 256-Kbps Frame Relay connection.

The Wingdings network includes two Windows 2000 server computers named DC1 and DC2. Both DC1 and DC2 are configured as domain controllers and as WINS servers. DC1 is located in the main office and DC2 is located in the branch office.

All computers in the main office are configured to use DC1 as their only WINS server. All computers in the branch office are configured to use DC2 as their only WINS server.

Users in the branch office frequently access file servers located in the main office. However, users in the main office never access file servers located in the branch office.

You want to configure WINS replication between DC1 and DC2. You need to ensure that client computers in the branch office are able to access the file servers located in the main office by name.

A. pull partner
B. push/pull partner
C. push partner

Answer: A

The clients in the Branch office require access to files on the server in the main office. Therefore, the branch office WINS Server (DC2) needs a copy of the WINS Database from the main office WINS server (DC1). We should configure DC2 to be a "Pull" partner to DC1. This will enable DC2 to "pull" a copy of the WINS database from DC1 at specified intervals.

My question: if on WINA, I configure replication partner type of WINB to be "push", does it mean that the WINA is gonna push WINB ? Or does it mean that WINB is gonna push WINA ? Or the 2 WINS are gonna push each other ?

"A pull partner is a WINS server from which the WINS server you are configuring receives its database. A push partner is a WINS server to which the WINS server you are configuring sends its database."

So...
When talking about "Push" or "Pull" we are always refering only to the server being configured. Not any of the other servers around it.

So pull information in and push information out.

If that is correct, why is the answer A? The question doesn't specify which server is being configured. Is it better to pull than to push?

Sorry, the answer states that DC2 is configured as PULL partner in the DC1 WINS console (i.e. the configuration takes place on DC1). Does that mean that DC1 will pull DC2 ?
Regardless what DC it refers to, what do you think if the configuration takes place on DC1 (partner type of DC2), and what do you think it should be if the configuration takes place on DC2 (partner type of DC1)?

Disregard my question, I was assuming you could set only one DC as a push or pull partner. I don't think that is true in 2000. I know it is not true in NT.

Here is how I see it.

Configuration must take place on both WINS servers,

DC1 is the main office DC, it has the info that needs to be duplicated and made available to the branch office. Therefore the database updates will be pushed out of DC1 to DC2. DC1 must be configured as a push partner to DC2.

DC2 is the DC that needs info about the main office server names, it will be pulling the database from DC1. DC2 must be configured as pull partner from DC1.

Push out, Pull in.

None of the answers you have posted seem to reflect a an accurate responce to the question. Either something is missing or it was a very badly worded question.

must get used to badly worded questions and microsoft's basic philosophies... it's a feature of the cert process...

When using ms's stuff, always read the bottom line first, then the whole question. MS loves trick questions. They will do things like If ns.publitech.com cannot reach neosoft.dns.publitech.com what is the first thing you should do? Slipping the d into neosoft.dns.publitech.com is an easy miss. You might read it as neosoft.ns.publitech.com and come up with a wrong awnser.

hi,
if you guys want to understand the pull and push partner, the best way is to do the lab - set up your wins server and configuer the replication.

For example, if you want replicate the database from Server A to B (A->B), you must do two things: the first, from Server A which you are configring config B as a push partner, the second, from Server B config A as a pull partner. then you can check each wins server's database, and you can see which server got the replica.

Just try it then you can see if i'm right.
Good luck
