7 gigs lost....

One of the servers at my work is missing 7 gigs. And by that i mean the C: partition is 12 gigs, it says there is only 300mb left. But when i browse C:'s contents and highlight everything and click properties it says that there is only about 5 gigs being used. There has been a few virus's on this server before i put it behind a firewall. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

what lead upto you noticing there was only this much on the C: showing? What events preceded you noticing the shortage in actual drive space?

Make sure you can see hidden files & folders.

Open Windows Explorer
Click Tools | Folder Options
View tab
Uncheck 'Hide protected operating system files...'

You may want to reduce the size of your virtual memory. The filename is pagefile.sys, check how big it is. It's in Sytem Properties/Advance/Performance options.

Some of the symantec solutions(NAV) when protecting drives, backup deleted files. When you delete files, NAV just puts them into a hidden folder in mother directory of a drive.

download treesize and run this.

it is a perfect tool for finding out where all your diskspace has gone.

you can also just install it on your own machine, and if you have admin rights on the server, map a drive to:
\\servername\c$ and let treesize scan the server from your PC - but installing it directly on the server is the quickest method

Another area to check is to empty the trash! You may find under the recycler multiple trash cans that have large file space reserved even though they do not contain any files. Thes could be 100's of MB, but does not explain you 7 GB of lost space.

I too suspect that you have some hidden folders that were or are being used by viruses to hold data. Also, is your drive compressed or are some folders compressed? What is the difference between the file size and size on disk when you look at the drive properties?

I recommend that you go to disk manager and see how big the drive actually is. It is possible that it really is only using the partial drive space for the C: partition. This is especially true if the original or current OS is NT4.0, as the default partition size was only 4 GB. What is you OS?

Hey guys. Thanx alot for all your help. My problem turned out to be someone got into my server and was hosting illegal movies. I figured out where they were and got rid of them.
