I recently assembled a computer:
ABIT sg-72 mobo w/ onboard sis video
Celeron D 2.93Ghz CPU
512 mb Viking pc2700 memory
300W antec PSU

Seagate IDE barracude 80GB hard-drive
Maxtor IDE 160GB HD
Memorex IDE DVD+-RW

I had some problems installing XP:
It would get to the "Setup is starting windows" part and would turns off abruptly. I was attempting to fix it when i set something wrong in the bios, and later it wouldn't load up the BIOS correctly. I cleared the CMOS and viola, XP setup went on smoothly!!

Anyways, while I was searching for possible culprits for the above problem, I found that CPU temperature may cause the computer to turn off during installation. SO, I took a look at the PCHealth status, and low and behold: the temperature was at 85 degs Celcius.

85 degs is apparently the maximum operating temperature for celeron processors greater than 2GHz. Then I loaded up, Motherboard monitor in XP, and right now the temperature is:
CPU : 70 degs C (Jumps to 85 rather quickly, but not lower)
Case: 44 degs C (Stays the same for the most part)
HD : 57 degs C (anywhere from 49-59 degs C)

All of these seem high. I plan on getting thermal paste to attach to my heatsink, and get some case fans. Also, going to take a look at CPUIdle (a cooling software).

Hope this helps some of you, having problems after assembling your own computer. My baby took about 10 hours of labor before it..... :p

Definitly too high. You say "get some thermal paste". How is it set up now (between the CPU and cooler assembly)? Arctic Silver is about the best for cooling, although anything is better than what you have now. Do the temperatures change if the side cover is left off? I wouldn't run the computer too much with these temps, It may run, but slowly shorten the life of the CPU.

I had a similar problem when I first got my p4 3GHz which was assembled by the profesionals at the store. I am talking about temps around 55 degrees. I went it back and they put a better cpu fan on it and a case fan as it didn't have one. Now the monitor program indicates a temp of 35 degrees which seems to be the normal. Apparently the p4 stock fans aren't good enough.

These sort of temperatures indicate a real problem that needs sorting straight away.
They are so high that I question wether you have any thermal paste/pad "at all" or if the heatsink isn't clamped down or seated properly?
Yes you need at least one extra case fan (first fan underneath the power supply exhausting) but even in the abscence of case fans these temps are unusually high.
