Got a HP laserJet 4100n, it comes up with
"68.0 permanant storage error" on display.
Tried reseting it but to no avail.

HP says it could be a faulty formatter or dim assembler, not sure what that means but very expensive.

Any ideas what it could be? Fixable ?

Does the printer boot to that message ? Have you inserted any additional memory or perhaps a harddisk ? On the left side of the printer there is a small hole just below the fan outlet. This is where the engine board testbutton is hidden. After bootup press this button to test the formatter. If OK it should print a page with lines vertical on portrait.

If you boot the printer this comes up on display,
"68.0 permanent storage error, check settings"
Nothing has been inserted into the printer. No memory etc.
The testbutton works ok, it prints off a page with lines vertical on portrait.
More suggestions ?

I can print one page at a time by pressing "Go" key.

An 68.XXXX error usually indicates an error the printer's nonvolatile memory (NVRAM) and one or more printer settings might have been reset to its factory default.
Try to hold down CANCEL JOB while turning the printer on. This will clean up the NVRAM by removing old areas that are not being used.
Another option might be to perform a cold reset on the printer, resetting both the printers settings and the JetDirect card (optional) Pull out the JetDirect card if you don´t want to reconfigure this device.
To perform a cold reset do the following:
1) Turn off the printer.
2) While pressing GO, turn the printer on. Release GO when Cold Reset appears briefly on the display, then Initializing appears. After a few seconds, Restoring Factory Settings appears on the display, followed by Offline. The cold reset is complete.
3) Press GO to return the printer online. Ready appears on the display.
If the error persists after these steps, a severe memory error might have occured on the formatter (possibly defect NVRAM) and the printer should be brought in for service at a HP service provider.
