On PG 105 - there is a question:
Which GBIC would you use for a connection over MMF?

The correct answer (according to the book is 1000base-SX/LX/LH.

According to what I found on Cisco's website, GBIC's come in three "flavors".

SX - MMF
LX/LH - SMF
ZX - SMF

Anyone have experience with the different types of Fiber GBIC and can shed some light (pun intended)?

Thanks,
Dan

Thanks the book lists many options, but this (which isn't in the book) explains the questions and the answer!

The types of Gbics and fiber cables basically come down to the distance.

SX GBics and MMF (Orange) is used for short distances 1800ft or lower. The S stands for "short haul"

LX/LH (Long Haul) and SMF (Yellow) is used for long distance 1800ft to 6miles. Note that MMF can be used with this gbic also, but normally used with SMF

ZX (Extended Hual) and SMF is for very long distances, 43 miles. The Gbic emittes a stronger laser than the LX/LH
