I am looking to build a performance system for graphics/video editing. Looking for suggestions for Motherboard/CPU combinations that have been proven to work. Would like to use a 64-bit version of the WindowsXP. Any and all suggestions welcome.
The only problem with the new 64bit Windows XP OS is a matter of drivers. Make sure all your hardware has drivers for the OS.
As far as motherboards go, what ever brand you like. There all good. Depends on your budget. IF you can wait, I'd suggest waiting until the price of dual core 64 bit chips come down. The AMD socket 939 and Opteron processor (and mb) are EXPENSIVE.
I've had my AMD Athalon 64 for almost 2 years and love it. Esp. with a SATA drive, it's a pretty fast system.
Check your applications and be sure that they run on Windows XP x64. There are a handful of 32-bit Windows XP applications that wouldn't work on x64. Also, if there is no x64 version of your application then running the 32-bit version on Windows XP x64 (assuming that it is compatible) will offer little performance improvement, if any at all.
That being said, I like ASUS boards. I've got a K8N and an Athlon 64 3000+ (socket 754). Runs like a champ and never had a hiccup. But nowdays most people will want to opt for a socket 939 board with PCI-E slots instead of AGP. While the 939 boards and CPUs used to have a price premium over the 754, they have come down in price quite a bit. Socket 754 is now for the value line of AMD CPUs and 939 is the platform standard.

What is your budget?
If the applications you use support dual CPU's then you are a prime candidate "user" for one of the new AMD X2 (dual core) Athlon64 processors.
Essentially two processors on one core and well suited to heavy multitask and encoding work.

I would just post one word of warning though, 64bit Windows is fairly new and not without some issues especially driver support, be sure thats the way you want to go.
