Just did an upgrade to 6.1 MICS etc. Customer had only M7324s all except one were Rls 4.

The volume on all sets except the one was too low for comfortable listening. Set/Sys vol had no effect neither did making the Loop Long CO. Volume control on set didn't really bring the volume up to a good level.

So I think this is a phone/software incompatability.

Is it a documented problem with nortel itas? Did you try twirling a dead chicken "fresh killed"over the sets in question because with the smoke and mirrors we use at work i am starting to believe voodoo magic is the next step in the natural proggression of telecommunications that and human sacrifice

Gotta love that Nortel Evergreen philosophy.
They must have been referring to their ability to rebound from disaster on the stock market.

6 months of snow ..by the time the 'green' comes it is fall and snow again !!

Well in ALL fairness to Nortel, the phones do work.. just not too well. Our momnificant telco, Telus has actually mailed all of their Norstar customers notice that they will no longer provide any support for Norstar phones Rls 17 or less. Gotta wonder what they know that we don't. I would rather have goofed somewhere than there be a glitch in the compatability.

There is actually a note in the MICS Installer's manual where it states that the Set/Sys volume system won't work on 'some' older phones. Wonder if the inclusion of the split volume system confuses these older sets. Anyone think of a way to work around?

Possible suggestion to your work around. I know the M series phones had a part number for noise cancellation handsets. Maybe you can try using one of them to see if that enhances the volume. If you do a search you should be able to find that part number, I think I used it in a older post. Never tried it, but maybe it will work. Hope that helps.

TELUS has, in cooperation with ITAS, decided that all M-type sets lower than Rlse 17 have persistent or intermittant volume issues. Voice and ringing volume, and the control of both. This has been an issue with BCM since 2.5 but in my experience it has diminshed as the BCM releases increase. But honestly, I havent seen it with R6.1 MICS. YET!
I think that like so many other things, Nortel isn't going to bother trying to fix anything on MICS/CICS at this point, especially on discontinued sets. So TELUS and I'm sure other large Telcos take the economical way out and no longer support the old sets either.

Nortel is running a rebate on upgrading current systems to new software and T sets. The phones are rebated $20/ea. If your already at 6.1, ask your vendor about the Loyalty Advantage rebate. If they aren't an authorized vendor, find one who is to buy the phones from. Then go back to your old vendor, if you like.

The Volume issue is (unfortunately) not just related to the sets. Nortel has just admitted to volume issues with the Global Line Cards.
Apparently it is a 'fairly rare' occurrence. (Where have we heard that before?)

Supposedly the combination of a long loop from the C.O. plus a High (>7DB) loss on Lines causes intermittent low volume even with T Series sets.

Nortel says no action will be taken (are we surprised?) since they have received very few complaints about the volume issue yet.

(Solution: Everyone start complaining loudly and often!) Well, actually, the solution is to replace the Global Line Card with older LSDS or CI cards as required (if you can locate any.)

The problem is definitely worse with older sets.
Best of Luck in your endeavor.

Al,

Wonder if using the old line cards would solve the vol problem with old sets and 6.1 software?

Do you have Global cards in the system that has the volume problem and if so, did you swap them out? I'm trying to stay up on this as I really think that this is the tip of the iceberg!! Please let us know your findings and if you've made any progress!

Haven't acted yet. Will post results if any.
