Greetings, I have a norstar MICS with 4.1 software running on a pri, delivered from timewarner telecom. They have a 5ESS c.o. switch. They say my norstar is missing a layer 3 Q931 protocol message when their switch goes into midnight routines to monitor the b-1 status of each of my channels. The trouble is every night after midnight their switch sends a protocol to my key system and does not get back what it is looking for, i.e.= layer 3 Q931. It receives a reply but is missing the one bit of information it needs to keep the channels idle on my switch. When I arrive in the morning to check my link status I have all channels disabled on the far side, while the c.o. says their channels are showing idle. The only way I can bring the channels back to idle is to place a call into the pri, and then busying out each individual channel as it "wakes" up from far end disable status. I have no clue how to troubleshoot this protocol issue, maybe you do! Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated...Thanks...tommygun

You can use these public protocals NI-1, DMS100, DMS250, or AT&T4ESS. For a private protacal there is SL-1.

Good Luck!!

If this just started the CO just upgraded there software to a new REL, either way talk to the CO and have them turn off B-channel services, they call it BCAS.

The setting will cause the lines to go out of service everynight. If an incoming line comes in it will clear the channel. To test reboot the MICS and see if the channels come up.

The Old Rolmen hit this exactly right. I got burned on this one quite badly a couple of years back. The kind you can't forget.

Thanks to all whom responded to my question, your answers were all excellent solutions to the problem. If I may ask one more quetion..You have helped me to identify a solution to the problem, but I still do not know what the problem is. Is the trouble with the channels disabling a Nortel protocol or 5ESS protocol problem. Who is responsible for this, as you can understand the customer is not going to foot the bill for my time working on this, and they want to know who is responsible for this. Go figure, I installed a Nortstar in a lawyers office and they want to know who's problem this is...No joke..Thanks Again..tommygun

LET ME PUT IT THIS WAY, I HAD A 0X32 WITH A PRI WORKING JUST FINE. ONE DAY ALL OF SUDDEN THE TRUNKS WERE BEING DISABLED, COME TO FIND OUT THE CO HAD JUST BROUGHT THE 5ESS UP TO THE LATEST AND GREATEST RELEASE.
AS FAR AS I KNOW THE 5ESS NEVER HAD A BCAS OPTION BEFORE, I WAS WORKING WITH A WORLDCOM CO AND THE TECH SAID HE WOULD SEND OUT A EMAIL DETAILING WHAT WE HAD FOUND.
IN OTHER WORDS HE DIDN'T KNOW WHAT THE OPTION DID.
