Warning, I have just killed a batch of 5410 phones by forcing a firmware update onto the phones, strange as some phones were ok.

I have seen other posts around this and now have an answer from AVAYA.

Any 5410 phone produced after Oct 07 will not require a firmware update, and if you try one you will render the phone usless. They are working on a fix.

So check the dates on the box before trying your firmware update.

i have some problem!!!! any news from avaya yet guys? Just upgraded all my sites, and some 5410's went kaput!

Call your distributor, ask for the list, don't use any from the list. 5410 only.

The first two posts were before that was posted intrigrant.

I got an email aleert from Avaya about this issue. I fwd a few guys Avaya BP's/techs whom I have email for but did not post it here as the email said the email document was not for the public. Got it midnight of the 23RD.

Product Hold Notice
Avaya 5410 Digital Telephone
Release Date: 22nd January 2008
Region: GLOBAL
Avaya 5410 Upgrade Issue
Overview
This Product Hold Notice is to advise authorized Avaya Distributors and
BusinessPartners who sell IP Office of an issue with select 5410 phones (i.e SAP Code
700382005). The issue is specific to the 5410 phones that were loaded with the most
recent software build.
No other phones, including the 5420, were affected by this issue.
Avaya quality control has put a ship hold specifically on the 5410 phones that start with
the following serial number sequence: 07N542XXXXXXX. Note: 42 represents the week
number of manufacture; phones prior to this date are NOT affected.
The most recent software build (release 5) loaded to the phone during manufacture, has
been found to cause a problem on installations when performing a firmware upgrade to
the phone. During installation, these phones may seek an upgrade to the firmware. If
allowed to continue, they will not connect and therefore not function.
Recommendation
Avaya is working to determine the best possible resolution and necessary actions. Do
not install the affected phones unless you have exhausted the alternatives outlined
below. We will keep you informed regularly with updates as we learn more and resolve
the situation.
COMPAS ID 133550 Issue 1 Page 2 of 2
In the interim, please follow these three steps:
1. Check the serial number of any 5410 phone to ensure that it is not in the affected lot.
If it is not, then you are fine to install it.
2. If the 5410 phones you have are in the affected serial numbers: you can install the
following instead.
Install 2410 series telephones instead (Note: the features and functionality are
identical.) That said, Avaya is working a process for the Business Partner that
will care for the price difference. Details of this process will be communicated as
soon as it becomes available.
3. If you have no alternative, and need to install the affected 5410 phones, please refer
to Technical Bulletin 91. This will describe the necessary action.
Please note this is a temporary measure. At any date in the future, when you
may want to, or need to upgrade these phones, you will experience this issue.
As of the date this notice, it is undetermined if phones can be fixed locally with a
software patch, or require replacement.
4. If you have recently installed IP Office systems with 5410 phones, it is possible that
some of them may be in the affected serial number range. They will continue to work
unless an attempt is made to upgrade them. Further communication from Avaya to
resolve installed, affected 5410 phones will be sent out as more information
becomes available.
Manufacturing of new phones has started, but will leave an inventory gap while
production ramps up. We are working with the distribution channel to determine the best
course of action to fulfill urgent installations.
If you have any additional questions, please contact your distributor or channel account
manager.
We apologize for any inconvenience caused and are committed to resolving this for you
with minimal disruption to your business.
