Has anyone else noticed any of your 5340 (or other 53xx) phones with the dial pad digits starting to wear off?

I have a 5340 on my desk showing noticeable heavy wear on the 0 and # keys, slight wear beginning to be visible on the 6, 8, 9 and * keys.

Seems like for what these cost that sure shouldn't be occurring. Never had it happen on the 400 or 4000 series phones.

Yes, i have noticed this happening on the 52xx srs phones as well.

This is due to the fact that the digit image is 'kiss printed' onto the top surface of the ABS plastic that the keys are made of.

On the ss 400/4000 and 5010/5020 srs range of phones the buttons are manufactured using the 'double shot' method of injection moulding.

First the black button is injection moulded with an image of the dial pad digit 'missing' ( i.e if you held the button up to the light you would see light showing through the button in the pattern of whatever digit is intended to be represented)

Then, once the black plastic has cooled and solidified, liquid white plastic is 'shot' into the black button from behind, some of this shows through the front of the button as the image of whatever digit you want to represent.

This is very expensive to set up and involves some sophisticated tooling to acomplish, but, once done, it will not wear off. Unlike printed images as you have found out.

In the past i have had to have stickers made up to replace dial pad buttons that have worn off, or are in the wrong language ( on import/export phones for instance ).

Hope this helps

Yes the 5212 models had a "bad" batch last year and Mitel recalled the known affected orders and put the 5212 on stop ship whilst the problem was rectified.

So are they going to fix the 53xx phones as well? Will they replace the ones in the field this is happening on?

Is there any way to identify our storeroom inventory?

I have had numerous 5312, 5212 and 5330 replaced without any issues. You can easily identify them by the glossy finish on the keys rather than the standard matte finish.

If the phones are reasonably new there shouldn't be any problem returning them especially as Mitel are aware of this issue. From memory I think the recalled sets were identified by the manufactured date on the box.

welcome to lets make everything over in China. Cause its cheaper. What next lead paint in the plastics. Christ.

Regardless of how old the sets are Mitel will still replace them.

You should contact your dealer - no matter what the warranty status is (still in, or out of).

This was not a Mitel issue, and Mitel will replace the set (again in warranty or not) free of charge.
