Is there a valid reason for Mitel not supporting the 5140/5240 IP Appliances going forward on the MXe server? Those were awfully expensive phones and are still not very old for Mitel to be discontinuing backwards compatability in the new MXe Server platform. What gives? Will there be any trade-in/trade-up program?

Is there a specific notice about this? I can see feature development stopping, but the phone should still work. I have 5010's running off a MXe Server.

I'll have to find the document again. I was reading something last week (don't recall now where I saw it) anyway there was no specific mention of those instruments, rather by omission, as they weren't listed among the supported sets. I'll dig around and see if I can find the document again.

From the 9.0 release notes.
No support for 5140, 5230 and 5240 sets.

'No support' is different than 'Not Supported', meaning that it may or may not work. New features on the sets won't work, but as long as nothing was done to preclude the sets, they should still work.

I think at one point I put a 5140 on a MXe Server. I didn't try all of the features, but basic calling worked. I can double check if you are interested.

To answer the original question though I think it's a matter of economics. The 5140/5120 were 'show piece' sets with different hardware and therefore software versions than the main stream sets (51xx). To keep supporting those, while bringing out new set lines (5360) would be too much I would expect.

The Enginering Guidelines say the 0 (ZERO) 5140/5240 IP Appliences are supported.

This says to me none/nada/don't go there.

My communications Director course specifies the following devices are supported.

5001, 5005, 5201, 5205, 5207, 5215 dual mode,
5220 dual mode, 5212, 5224, 5230, 5550 IP
Console, Navigator, 5235, 5302, 5330, 5340 IP
sets, 5560 IPT and Telematrix.

Note: I took this course some time ago and it would be reasonable to assume that any new 53XX sets are also supported.

Yup, that's where I read it, in the release notes for 9.0 UR2/PR2 (page 8)

I'm just afraid that's going to go over like a lead balloon. Those were very expensive sets.

MIMB

When a MXe server is deployed it is standard to have a second 3300 to act as the gateway for PSTN and other Non IP connections.

The 5140 and 5240's are still supported on these lesser machines (Up to 100). Can you not just register them to the Gateway instead of the server?

Of course you can register them to the gateway, but for reasons of internetworking (companion key appearances primarily) you will generally need (want) to keep entire multiline groups together on the same controller. The functioning of key apps, BLF, etc. across network element boundaries still leaves a lot to be desired. (functional latency)

Then once done, it then becomes necessary to track that "group" in a database somewhere as they ebb and flow in size.

Fortunately I only have approx 15 of the 5140/5240 instruments + maybe 4 5240's still in factory sealed cartons. Maybe time to call the secondary mkt & dump 'em before they lose all value.

I'm really a little annoyed at Mitel for this, as I believe this marks the first time they have ever abandoned support of this new of a model, in particular abandoning a high-end IP set right in the middle of IP development.

I take it these sets have Key appearances of or on other sets. This being the case, I cannot suggest a viable option. Looks like you'll have to try the squeaky wheel approach with your Mitel Rep.

This is a disaster. My boss demands to "make them work" whatever it takes. People who use them don't want to migrate to 5340. It seems to them overcomplicated access to call history and other applications in 5340 when you have to navigate through question/answer model menu instead of having list style flex buttons in 5240. I think Mitel should continue development of these models unles they hit some sort of patents on this kind of interface.

Well, as kwbMitel correctly suggests we can put them on the gateway node(s) but as I pointed out it makes it a holy PITA to keep track of when the group ebbs and flows (due to companion key appearances, BLF, etc).

......"oh, you're moving & joining the dingbat group? That requires changing controllers....."

Grrrrr.....
