I have a customer that's having an issue with garbled/choppy audio that go thru their IP phones on site (non networked system). This has been going on since it's original install of about a year ago. Most of the users have IP phones (models: 5330 & 5320's). Some of the users have PC's connected to the phones, some don't. It doesn't always happen all the time and it intermittently will happen on different phones at different times. The customer has around 238 IP devices and 11 digital sets programmed. One of the digital sets is being used a "pass thru" to their external paging amplifier for their warhouse and external zones. They have 4 page groups. All page, just phones, warehouse and external overheads. The garbled and choppy pages ONLY happen on the IP phone's. One of my suggestions to the customer was to run wireshark or some kind of packet sniffer to see if there might be any loops in the network. The suggestion was recieved with "rolling eyes" and a response of "It's NOT our network" so I'm left with finding another way to rule out their network.

Any suggestions or thoughts would be appreciated.

I would assume with a system that size that there are VLANs in place, if not that would be my first step.
Are there any QoS profiles setup on their switches and routers?

238 Devices! Does the page go out through all of the Phones or do you have them zoned?

Do you have a PEC-1 and a PS-1?

I wouldn't be surprised if you are paging to all phones the system is basically running out of processing power.

Yes

Yes, both.

I don't know what's in the MITEL tech notes as far as the recommended amount of phones per page group. I need to find something to hand to the customer and say this is what the manufacturer supports. I was just told by the tech who installed the system that they told the customer to take un-necessary phones out of the group.

If anyone finds the page in the tech notes in their travels, could you let me know here? Thanks.
:)

I haven't seen an exact number. Below is extracted from the Programming and Features Guide
Take note of the NOTE

Thanks sarond, I actually found the installation guide and the max number is 60 phones per zone. I guess I will have to test with different number of phones to see what we can get away with.
