I know that Avaya does not support over 500 phone scn.
But has anybody exceeded this limit? And were there any problems?

Have a customer with around 600 sets (Magix linked together)
Would love to put him in ip office with centralized vm.

it can work but it's not supported and you could expect some strange problems

The 500 user limitation is within a SCN. Simply disable "Voice Networking" and expand the multi-site network as you desire. Your site-to-site dialing will need to be based on shortcodes at that point and centralized voicemail will be out but with the magix you were likely using decentralized VM anyway and will probably want to stick to that.

With 500+ users and SCN what (bad) happens? Is this some arbitrary number Avaya came up with and coded in to the sysem?

The question is do you want to take the risk with a 500+ user customer to install something that is not supported?

Will the customer be happy if he pays for something and ends up with a bunch of problems?

Sure there are ways of making it work in an IPO environment but wouldn't it be better to install a system meant for that size and that the customer can grow in.

Can you still do the centralized VM Pro if SCN is disabled? I didn't think it could build the VM Boxes because the systems didn't swap databases.

Revisiting this topic again... Is there a way to have the directory (the one that appears in the telephone) contain all ip office users if there are more than 500 users? For example, company A (400 ip office users) merges with Company B (300 ip office users) and wants 1 directory in the phone. Someone mentioned that the Definity product might be able to act as the central "hub" for directory and voip calls etc?

I have a customer with a Definity R11 at their headquarters and 5 IP Office locations and it works great. Let me know if you have specific questions on the setup of this.

The limitation as I understand it is available memory in each of the IP Office systems. They all need to know about each others extensions, 500 extension numbers (or even before) is the upper limit of RAM.

The IP Office is a SMBS (Small & Medium-sized Business Solutions) product. The ACM/Definity/MultiVantage is a ECG (Enterprise Communications Group) product.

If you are a SMB customer then you have an IP Office. If you are a large customer (in Avaya's case, over 500 users) then you use an ACM. It's that simple.

All technologies, the IPO included, are designed and tested to certain limits. The IPO has a limit of 500ish users. Just like it's tested with a 1m interconnect patch cable. That's what the system is designed for and that's what it should be used for.

The IPO isn't the only system in the world. You don't have to use it for absolutely every customer you have. For larger customers, use the ACM or another system all together.
