Hey all,

I've installed Samba on a Red Hat 8.0 box but I have run into a bit of a problem. All my users have 5 character passwords and my RH wants 6. Is there a way to lower the required number of characters in a password in RH 8.0 to 5?

Thanks,

Joe Brouillette

Maybe I'm going about this wrong. For someone to access a share on a Samba server don't they also need an account on the Samba server? I've tried to setup their accounts but it just won't accept passwords less than 5 characters long. I don't get any error messages, it just won't save the account information.

Thanks,

Joe Brouillette

Joe,
I am assuming that when you create the password with 6 or more it works fine?

If you can try this:
su to a user and type smbpasswd and try changing it that way. Or log in to the samba server as a normal user and use smbpasswd to change the password.

See if that "take effect".

If not I will give it a try here and see mostly because you sprked my interest in that problem.
Thanks,
Bill

Basically, the problem is the Unix (not just RedHat) default is 6 chars min. I'd prefer if it were 8 so we have a few intrusions less because of doofus passwords.

Hey PC,

I just did the smbpasswd and it works with passwords of less than six characters.

Thanks,
