4630 ip set keeps failing on upgrading bootapp

I just got a supposedly new 4630 screenphone and when it boots it shows welcome to the 4630 screenphone. After that it goes to updating bootapp, then it says bootapp upgrade failed. It does this a few time and then goes to save complete after quite a while. I checked the tftp server and it's not even hitting it. Any ideas? Is this a nice paperweight? I didn't buy it from avaya so I can't send it back to them.

Did you configure the phone to look for your TFTP server? Right after the Welcome Screen - you should see press * to configure, or something like that in the upper left hand corner. Press that then manually load the IP information - that might do it.

I tried booting it again holding down the * and it did the same thing. It never says anything but the welcome screen and then immediately goes to upgrading bootapp with no other messages in between.
