Hi guys,

We have a large number of 4600 IP phones running off two S8700 servers. We would like to upgrade the firmware on all the phones, all at once.

Can anyone recommend any techniques they have used to do this? The options that come to mind are:

1. Rebooting every phone manually (tedious)
2. Disabling & enabling PoE to the phones via the switch
3. Busying the Clan (ooh of course!) and then releasing it

Also, is there a maximum number of phones that can simultaneously pull the upgrade from the TFTP server? We have the Avaya TFTP server app running on a pretty powerful server.

by using the "reset ip-stations" command you can reset all ip phones in the system or you can do it by network region - "reset ip-stations network # "

Excellent! From F5'ing that command in ASA, I see that you can do it by ip ranges too:

reset ip-stations ipaddr 192.168.1.50 192.168.1.100

We have a separate voice VLAN for each floor here, so with this command we can control exactly how many phones are reset at once.

Thanks for the help :)
