4100 "install toner cartridge"

I have a laserjet 4100 that will not clear a install toner cartridge message. I have tried more than one cartrige with the same result. My theory is something in the printer is keeping this message on the screen. Where should I look first?

I take it you just changed to a new cartridge..

Try configuration menu, new toner cartridge = yes

tried new toner cartridge, tried replacing toner, tried formatter, no go. Printer has been put out to pasture.
