406v2 Expansion Modules - Extending Cable Length

Hi,

Bit too long to explain why, but I want to put a DS30 and IPO406v2 in different rooms. I've experimented and I can use a CAT5 cable of around 10ft, no more. After that the expansion module "disappears".

Am I right in presuming, that this is because the signal from the 406 to the expansion module is Analog?

If not, and here is the $64k question, is there a way of extending this "10ft" limit. A repeater etc,?

No change
The modules do need there blue cable
If you do not do this you will have problems !!!
You need to pull cables to the other room

I have extended an extension module by about 20 feet but used shielded cat6. no problems.

Now does anyone have a technical answer? Why is there a limit? Is the signal analog?

No the signal is not analogue,

There is a limit because the hardware evidently has a limitation. I believe that the main issue is clocking - i.e. keeping the units synchronised.

shielded is also important but isn't it easier to run a 25 pair cable and have then a patch panel in the other location (ok more money but there are some limitations to everything)

the limit is because of the TDM sode of things, in order to have all the handsets talking at once it allocates a time slot to each (TDM) to make this unnoticable it switches between slots hunbdred of times a second this needs very accurate synchronisation and extending the cable length increases the delay and so calls fail and allsorts starts to go wrong. I would do as Westi says and pull a 25 pair or 50 pair cable in, it's much more flexible that way and it's supported

i used a 7foot cable once and had all sorts of issues. put the blue cable in and all issues gone.

if they insist on using their cables they could at least make them half a foot longer.

a fully stack 412 without enough cable management bars looks v untidy.

Tom i agree. It doesnt work well when you have a lot of modules. they have to be together with no space for it to work. even then they are tight.

I put the processor in the middle of a 412 stack - never have a trouble with cable length. Although it would be great if Avaya offered an extender of some sort - via copper or fiber - that would allow a module to be in another building. Nortel MICS had a 3rd party extender that came in handy...

they actually do offer that it has a special name, how is it called I can't think of it right now......
I got it SCN is the product called ;-), they sell you an additional processor and you are good to go but it has quite the price tag for just a few extensions in a different room I admit.

Putting the 412 in the middle is a good idea. nice one mforrence.

although a lot of our 412s have been gradually added to over time, so it would take a lot of forward thinking. not a strong point of mine.
