I am a web developer and have a client who is having problems logging onto a site.

Each time they try to access a page that is password protected (http_access), the page jumps straight to a 401 authentication error without prompting for a username and password. Client is using IE6.00, Win XP, dial-up connection and it was working fine until a week ago.

Tested the page out on other WinXP/2000/98 PCs all using IE6.0 and it is fine so likely to be a machine specific problem - any ideas as i'm stumped?

You could try deleting all saved passwords in IE6.

Tools -> Internet Options -> Content (tab) ->
Auto Complete -> Clear Forms -> Clear Passwords.

Also try deleting all Cookies and temporary internet files.

Tools -> Internet Options -> Delete Cookies -> Delete Files

Thanks for the advice but i'm afraid that it didnt do the trick.

I think i'm going to leave it to their IT bods to sort out.
