Hello again!

My 384MB machine seems to be running at 40% free! I read the other posts about finding things that are running, but I can't seem to find which utility to run that actually gives you the size in memory of each running task.

Hope someone can help
Barry

Wow 40% is very low I think I'd crash if I ever got that low.

Process Viewer 2000 is a small simple tool that will show you everything that is running much better than the tools in Win 98. It will allow you to shut things down but it also gives you what is automatically starts so you can open whetever program and stop it from starting all the time.

A couple things to check:

1) After bootup, hit CTRL-ALT-DEL. In the Close Program dialog box, count the number of processes currently running. The number should be less than 20 easy (less than 10-12 preferred). If you have a lot, there's a good sign of why you're low on resources.

2) Start by right-clicking items in your system tray that you don't need running at startup. Most will have a settings option that you can go into and disable from startup.

3) Then, go to Start->Programs->Startup and remove any shortcuts you don't need. REBOOT

4) Check your system resources now. Satisfactory is above 80%, while excellent is above 90%. Then go to Start->Run and type msconfig followed by OK. On the startup tab, you'll see what's left. If you're not sure what you can disable, post back with the entries.

5) You can also use Resource Monitor under 'Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools' to see how what each app is using on your system.

Good Luck!!

Hello again,

I followed your link to that utility and it doesn't work anymore. So far running msconfig I am sitting at 70% free!

Do you have any other links I can try?

Thanks a lot!
Barry

2 questions left:

1) Did you use Resource Monitor to determine what apps are using what resources?

2) As soon as you finish booting, how many processes do you have running in the background (CTRL-ALT-DEL to see)? You should be under 12 by now.

As a side note, I recently tested Norton Systemworks 2003 on two different Win9x machines. Before installing it, resources were well above 80% on both at startup. Now, they're below 70% because of a new process Symantec introduced that's required by the Antivirus scanner. Just throwing it out there in case you own that program...

Hello,

I have 9 resources running now. With the Internet Explorer running, I have :
77% System
77% User
91% GDI

I looked for Resource Monitor, but all I have is Resource Meter (which gave the info above), and System Monitor which doesn't show me how much memory each program is using.

See ya
Barry

Excellent!!

Thanks for the info, hopefully now I should be all set!

Hey mclellan,

I'm curious as to what the problem is? Is your computer running slow, having problems, etc.? btw physical memory has nothing to do with resources or leakage.

When I ran win98 my usual resources free at start up was 94-96%, however I usually ran it to 0-10% frequently thruout the day without a problem, slight slowdown under 10% and sometimes a freeze at 0% until I turn off a program or a window then all is well.

So I'm curious as to what your problem is?

Thank you for restating your problem.
