In ID cs (PC) I've been trying to print out a 4foot X 8inch banner with my Epson photo 870 inkjet printer.

I can do this in Photoshop, no problem.
I can save the ID cs file as a .PDF file and print it out more or less ok.
Is there any way that I can print out this 4 foot banner in ID cs?

The problem I am having is that I can only print a small portion of the 4 foot banner and in the Epson "print preview" window part of the content is hidden and not printable.

Having tried solving this for two days now I wonder if I am trying to do the impossible?
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated
kind Regards

Is the paper size in the ID print dialog (not just the document itself) set to four feet long, via Custom size?

Dear Genimuse
Yes the paper size in ID when I click
1. ctrl P
2. "setup"
3. "print preset" set to custom
4. "paper size" the paper size is "width 8 inches height 48 inches
5. "options" scale width is selected
6. "scale to fit" is not selected

Also would like to mention I'm using windows XP
When I just went ahead and printed this test banner ID just printed it on an A4 sheet!

Hope this helps and many thanks for your time

Hmm. "width 8 inches height 48 inches" -- is the banner vertical?

Is the original document actually 48" wide? Or not, and is that why you have "scale width" on?

Dear Genimuse
1. Re: is the banner vertical?
Ans: Yes it is.

The document preset in indesign is for a 48 inch wide horizontal banner. The printer definitions for custom paper in my printer are always given with the height indicating the orientation of the paper as it is fed into the printer.
In other words a 10 meter roll of paper would be given the cusom height of 10 metres

2. Yes the document is 48" wide? and I only had "scale width" on in a trial and error scenario - Do you think it better not to have it on?

3. I've also received the following:

Sometimes InDesign does not "play nice" with non-Postscript printers,
especially when printing in large format. In these situations--as you
have discovered--generating a PDF from InDesign and printing from
Acrobat or Reader often works fine. I would stick with that, rather
than spend time trying to print directly from InDesign.

PDF is a great answer, and is the logical next step, I agree.

Further info re:
"Trying to print out large 5 foot banners or large images"
Photoshop elements, Photoshop 7, and Indesign cs all have a 30,000 pixel limitation. This appears to be causing the problem.
Photoshop cs has a 300,000 pixel limitation and it appears that a long banners etc, could be printed out on roll paper in Photoshop cs.

However one work round in Indesign cs is to save the file as a .ps or .eps (post script) file and then use a piece of software called ghostscript which turns the Epson inkjet printer into a temporary post script printer and does the job.

Wow, glad you figured it out, that's great, and thanks very much for passing the information along!
