Dear All :

we have an issue with the CPU Load - while the Antivirus is affecting the other process on the Server ...

We did a lot of tuning to decrease the priority of the AV - and we exclude a lot of application folders but the problem still exists ...

We added 2 additional CPUs to make the total 4 CPUs but currently we are seeing that the CPU occupied for only 50% but we still face the same problem which forced us to disable the AV to have an occupation with about 30% ...

Is there anything we can do to enhance the performance and to distribute the load equally on the CPUs ?

Knowing that the Memory is also free and the RAMs are 4G ..

What OS ?
What applications are you running ?
What AV are you running ?
Have you configured the power options in the bios correctly ?
Are the applications you are using actually capable of running on multiple CPU's ?
Is a particular CPU/Core taking all of the load while the rest are idle ?
What performance issues are you having with the box ?
Have you checked context switches and interrupts using perfmon ?
How is your disc IO ?

These are all the questions I would ask myself to start with.

I would start by working through the power options in the bios and operating system and also checking where the load is on your cpu's.

I hope this helps.

What OS ? Win 2003 Server
What applications are you running ? Payment System Application
What AV are you running ? Trendmicro
Have you configured the power options in the bios correctly ? [red]More information please ?[/red]
Are the applications you are using actually capable of running on multiple CPU's ? Don't think so - but we need to at least force it to use a specific CPU while all the others application on the server to use the rest of the CPUs
Is a particular CPU/Core taking all of the load while the rest are idle ? This was the case before adding the new CPUs, but the other CPUs are now sharing the loads as being noticed from the perfmon.
What performance issues are you having with the box ? The Network traffic id facing a delay as noticed from the application while these traffic is payment transactions ...
Have you checked context switches and interrupts using perfmon ? No - but I will
How is your disc IO ? There is a high traffic while all the transactions are being traced , however the server specs are high and we never faced this problem with Symantec Anti virus which was being used before ...

Yea it definately points to the antivirus or interrupts (possibly caused by AV). I will be honest with you I have never used trend micro before and I cannot be of that much help with it.

Since AV is currently disabled have you tried uninstalling trend micro to see if you regain your performance ?

If your CPU's are set to save power anywhere in the BIOS or OS that can cause massive performance issues.

Are your cpu's optimised for applications or back ground services ?

Have you played around with the CPU affinity (change the CPU affinity within task manager (or possibly SQL I am no SQL guru)?

I have also encoutered problems after the uninstall of symantec if you are not using a fresh build. How was symantec uninstalled ?

To be honest I am just trying to give you more ideas that you may not have looked at.

Regards,

Adam

is there any parameter should be added to the boot.ini to force the system distribute the load correctly among the new added CPUs ? I know that there is some parameters for the RAMs but is there any for the CPUs ?

Not unless you originally installed a single proc version of windows (ie different HAL) other than that it just works when you plug a cpu in.
